Pratik Gandhi On Audience Are NOT Being Happy With OTT Content
When asked about the audience not being happy with the OTT content made, Pratik Gandhi said, “I’m saying largely, somewhere I think we are missing out on understanding the audience. What I personally felt is that the audience has suddenly evolved multifold, especially post-COVID. Because they suddenly got exposure to international content. They proved that they understand it. Earlier, they never got this, but now they were ready for it. The audience suddenly evolved multifold, and all of us makers took a little while to gauge them. Because for years, we were always testing the audience, typecasting them. I personally feel the audience was typecast because the makers were lacking somewhere, so to cover up my own faults, I tested the audience.”
He further added how OTT platforms performed very well in the beginning. Gandhi said, “The OTT platforms started off very well, fearlessly experimenting with stories. They said, ‘There is an audience for everything,’ and they actually found an audience for everything. The audience accepted it and lapped it up; it worked very well. But now there is fear. The fear of numbers, and also censorship to some extent. Numbers mean that makers want the TV-watching audience on their platform, too. They want somebody who’s watching saas-bahu dramas also on their platform. But when you start doing this, the real idea of having a democratic platform starts dying.”
Pratik On OTT Platforms Content Demand
The Saare Jahan Se Accha actor said, “Out of fear, they’ve begun creating second-screen experiences for the audience—template-based content. Why so much of it? The logic is: somebody cooking in the kitchen with the TV on somewhere else, even if they don’t watch it, they listen to it and know what happened. Anytime they can join the story and follow it. But that’s not real enjoyment—it’s just blabber, background noise. And the same logic is now being applied on platforms, under the pretext that it’s very difficult to get the audience’s attention because they’re all sitting with their mobiles and might switch anytime. But my counter to this is—if my content is intelligent enough and requires the audience to watch it intelligently, then they are even more engaged. I have to demand their attention.”
Pratik was recently seen in Saare Jaahan se Accha and Phule.
