Pratik Gandhi On Playing Gandhi, Harshad Mehta

When asked about his responsibility of playing a historic character, Pratik Gandhi said, “The only moral responsibility I feel when I create these characters is that I constantly pray to God to help me not judge the character. I don’t want to judge the character, even after knowing the whole story about Gandhi’s life. The same goes for Vishnu’s character; I don’t want to judge. I also don’t want to put the character on a pedestal.”

Taking the example of his character Harshad Mehta, the actor elaborated. He said, “When I create a character, I’m not supposed to judge it; I’m supposed to live it. Imagine, every person, whatever they did, never knew exactly what was going to happen next. In hindsight, we know the whole story, but when I’m creating a character, if I judge them by the end result, then I’m colouring the character right from the beginning. In that case, you won’t enjoy watching it, and it won’t work. If I play Gandhi with the thought in my mind that he was the Father of the Nation, the Mahatma, and then play Gandhi, it doesn’t work. It becomes a single-tone character, and most probably, that kind of portrayal goes only one way. So my only effort and concern is not to judge the character. I don’t want to sympathise with the character; I just have to empathise with the character and feel them at that point.”

Pratik was recently seen in Saare Jaahan se Accha and Phule.
