EXCLUSIVE: Sandiip Sikcand Slams Hindi TV Producers For Serving ‘Ghisa-Pita Remakes’; Compares Them To Regional Series Saying, “Wahan Aisi Storytelling Hoti Hai Joh…”

Sandiip Sikcand is known for producing TV shows like Yeh Hai Mohabaatien, Mehendi Hai Rachne Waali, among others. Now, he is currently co-producing Marathi TV shows, Abolie and Yedh Laglie Premache. He is also working on Tamil and Telugu projects.

In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Bubble, Sandiip Sikcand compares Hindi TV shows with regional TV shows. He elaborated on how regional storytelling is what attracts him the most. The actor-producer also mentioned which new concepts he would like to see on TV. Scroll down to read more

Sandiip Sikcand On Hindi TV Shows Today

When asked about the backlash family-oriented shows face today, Sandiip Sikcand said, “Pehle toh Yeh Hai Mohabbatein mein main creative director tha, main showrunner tha — woh Balaji ka show tha on Zee(sic). Well, mujhe toh infact lag raha hai ki TV mein kuch naya ho hi nahi raha. Mujhe aise lag raha hai, matlab jo aap bol rahi hain ki adult themes, mujhe infact waise shows dekhne hain. Mujhe alag stories dekhni hain, mujhe alag concepts dekhne hain. Ab toh main jo bhi promo dekhta hoon aajkal, mujhe har naya promo kisi na kisi purane show ka copy lagta hai.”

Continuing, the Yeh Hai Mohabaatien creative director said, “Matlab, aapko lagta hai ki bhaiya inhone yeh do shows utha liye, unko mix kar diya aur ek naya promo bana diya. Ya phir lagta hai ki yeh show toh humne pehle dekha tha, yeh story toh humne already dekhi hai. Main acting ki taraf bhi zyada isliye jhuk raha hoon kyunki mujhe lag raha hai ki Hindi television is not experimenting enough. Mujhe nahi lagta ki woh alag tarah ke shows kar rahe hain, kyunki aap wahi shows dekh rahe ho, sab ladkiyan ro rahi hain, sab ladkiyan bechari abla naariyan bani hui hain.”

Sandiip said Hindi TV shows are not doing much compared to regional TV. He said, “Aur mujhe lag raha hai ki infact Hindi television zyada kuch kar nahi raha hai. Isliye mera jhukav zyada regional ki taraf hai. Main abhi shows Telugu, Tamil aur Marathi mein kar raha hoon. Aur mujhe usmein bahut maza aata hai, kyunki wahan par ek actual storytelling hoti hai. Wahan har show alag hota hai. Wahan aisi storytelling hoti hai jo Hindi khud nahi karti hai, par uske baad usko copy karti hai.”

Sandiip Sikcand On What TV Themes Excite Him

The Abolie producer mentioned, “Toh mujhe infact lagta hai ki Hindi television ko aage badhna chahiye. Alag shows karne chahiye, adult themes, LGBTQ themes, extra-marital affairs, jo aaj ke time mein real-life mein ho raha hai. Agar aap dekho aaj kal ki films, toh jo main heroes aur heroines hain, woh bhi kitne change ho gaye hain. Matlab, aaj ki heroine beer pi sakti hai. Jaise, maine abhi Saiyaara dekhi thi, toh you know, the characters were so real, they were so different. Mujhe lagta hai, aur hum log bolte hain ki television is not ready for such characters. Toh mujhe samajh mein nahi aata, agar television ready nahi hai, toh yeh films itna business kaise kar rahi hain?”

Concluding, he said, “Matlab, somewhere down the line, the audience is ready for new things. The audience is ready for different things. Mujhe nahi pata TV ne yeh kaisa attitude le rakha hai ki hum nayi cheezein nahi karenge, hum ya toh sirf remakes karenge, ya phir wahi ghisa-pita dikhayenge. Mujhe lagta hai TV ko yeh change karna chahiye. Mera point of view bilkul yeh hai ki aise themes aane chahiye. We should see on television the reflection of what you see outside, and what you see in society, par woh ho nahi raha hai.”

Sandiip has admitted that he is a huge fan of Bigg Boss. Fans are waiting to see if he makes his way into Bigg Boss 19.
