Shubhangi Dutt Reflects On Playing An Autistic Person Like Priyanka Chopra Played Jhilmil In Barfi

When asked how challenging it was to play Tanvi in Tanvi the Great, taking an example of Priyanka Chopra as Jhilmil from Barfi, Shubhangi Dutt said, “It’s a very different and very challenging story. But I think when I started my research, my first thought was that everything and everyone is so different. So I couldn’t just look at one person, one story, or one situation to follow. That’s why I even asked, sir, ‘How am I supposed to get into this character?’ And he just said that from now onwards, actually, from the day they told me I was selected, because by then, in those 6 months, I had already imbibed a lot of gestures and characteristics through my interpretation.”

She added, “Based on what the sir said, my research, and everything else. Then, sir told me, ‘Do not stop watching or doing your research, because once we begin our proper rehearsals and prep, I will make you unlearn everything.’ That’s what he told me. Even when I went to meet the real Tanvi, I asked him the same thing, ‘Am I supposed to mimic her? Am I supposed to do exactly what she does? What am I supposed to observe?’ And the only thing he told me was, ‘Just observe her soul.'”

Concluding, Dutt said, “I think he wanted me to capture the soul of every autistic person and bring it to life through my creative interpretation. That, I believe, was his instruction, something I perhaps understood later. But once I did, I created an entire scenario and picture in my head, and that’s what I followed.”
