Bollywood actors live a life of glitz and glam which is all things lavish in every way. But what happens when the shine runs off and you’re left in deep dark waters. There have been many times that Bollywood actors had found themselves in deep financial crisis where they have gone bankrupt or have been at the edge of bankruptcy.

From Amitabh Bachchan registering his production house to be a sick company to SRK’s production tanking at the box office. Here are the Bollywood actors who went bankrupt during their successful career.

Amitabh Bachchan

Amitabh Bachchan had established his own production house Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL) in 1996 but till 1999 the company was in a major financial mess and approached BIFR (Board of Industrial and Financial Reconstruction) to be rated as a sick company. Despite being a huge star, Big B was officially bankrupt, all his properties were mortgaged, he had a debt of Rs 90 crore while there were no films to back him up. In a post, Big B had once shared about going bankrupt in 2000, “In the year 2000, when the entire world was celebrating the new century, I was celebrating my disastrous fortune. There were no films, no money and no company.”

Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri Khan had produced the sci-fi movie Ra.One. The movie also starred Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal in lead roles. Ra. One was produced with a whopping budget of Rs 150 crores but failed to perform at the box office. Reportedly, this left Khan in deep financial crisis. It is said that SRK had signed blank cheques during the production of the movie. But SRK recovered from bankruptcy soon with movies like Don 2 and Jab Tak Hain Jaan.

Raj Kapoor

Mera Naam Joker was released at the theatres in 1970. The movie gave Kapoor major international acclamation and it is also one of the most iconic movies of all time. But Mera Naam Joker tanked at the box office leaving the actor in financial crisis. Talking to IANS, Rishi Kapoor had said, “We were in severe problems. Then he made a film called Bobby with a new boy and a new girl, which was a huge risk after seeing the failure of Mera Naam Joker. But it became super hit and that is when his friends and my uncles insisted on him to buy a house.”

Govinda

Govinda is one of the most loved actors in Bollywood. He was an icon in the 90s and the 2000s. But his career reached a consolidation at a point and he was not receiving any offers for 3-4 years. The actor soon found himself in debt and was even seen breaking down in front of the press. But, he soon made a comeback at the box office with Salman Khan in the movie Partner which was much loved at the box office.

Preity Zinta

Preity had made her comeback in Bollywood with the movie Ishkq In Paris in 2013. The movie was produced by her own production company. But the movie did not do well at the box office at all. This left Zinta in major financial crisis. But it is said that Preity then received help from her close friend in Bollywood Salman Khan.
