India is celebrating Kargil Vijay Diwas a day observed each year on July 26. It is to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in the Kargil War in 1999. The Kargil War between India and Pakistan was fought from May 3 till July 26, 1999. On this day, the Indian Army ousted Pakistani intruders and regained Tiger Hill and other posts as part of Operation Vijay.

The war took place as the Pakistani Army illegally occupied Indian territory near the Line Of Control in Kargil. 30,000 Indian soldiers fought against Pakistani troops and won. 527 Indian soldiers were martyred. The conflict which lasted for over 60 days has been depicted in several Bollywood films. The movies through their unique storylines have lauded the bravery and the sacrifice of the Indian soldiers. Shershah

Sidharth Malhotra won hearts with his portrayal of Captain Vikram Batra a Kargil War hero. Batra was martyred on July 7, 1999, after re-capturing Point 4875 at Kargil from Pakistani troops. The movie is a biopic on the life of the young army captain, with Kriti Sanon playing the role of his girlfriend Dimple Cheema. The stirring story of Captain Batra’s life left fans quite emotional.

Janhvi Kapoor played the leading role of Gunjan Saxena an Indian Air Force pilot. The movie chronicles the journey of the first Indian female air force pilots to fight a war. The multi-starrer based on the Kargil War has brilliantly encapsulated the varying emotions that the Indians went through during the war.

The film revolves around the life of a young boy who joins the army and fights the Kargil War. The protagonist, Karan Shergill (Hrithik Roshan), is an aimless man who eventually joins the Indian Army and helps win the Kargil War against Pakistan. The film also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Boman Irani and Om Puri in pivotal roles.

Captain Anuj Nayyar was one of the Indian Army officers who died defending Kargil’s Tiger Hill from the Pakistani military. The movie that was directed by Ashwini Chaudhary deals with the aftermath of Nayar’s death. The film stars Om Puri, Revathy, Sanjay Suri and Gul Panag, in pivotal roles.
