Harjes died on Tuesday, May 27, at Mount Sinai West Hospital in New York City, where he had been admitted after receiving a cancer diagnosis last winter.

He was also an exceptional horseback rider and had a special affinity for animals.” Harjes was also an avid martial arts enthusiast and a regular at the gym. He would often joke that “working out was safer than facing a kick from a horse.”

His official obituary states that Harjes is survived by his parents, sister, nephews, nieces, and his beloved cat, Maude. Instead of flowers, his family has requested donations to TKC Blessings, a charity that provides scholarships to children aspiring to pursue the arts. This cause was meaningful to Harjes. Before pursuing acting during his college years, and began his stage career in the Dallas–Fort Worth theatre scene. He eventually moved to New York City, where he was active in off-Broadway productions and independent films before joining TV.

Harjes’ breakthrough role was portraying boxing legend Jack Dempsey in two episodes of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire during its second season. He also played the character Pete Baylor in a nine-episode arc of Netflix’s science fiction series Manifest.
