Lord Curzon Ki Haveli Review
Anshuman Jha – who’s received praise for his acting in films like Love, Sex Aur Dhokha, Yeh Hai Bakrapur, Angrezi Mein Kehte Hain and Lakadbaggha, has made his directorial debut with a black comedy titled Lord Curzon Ki Haveli. While the trailer promised us an engaging mystery thriller, does the film deliver? Read our review to know the answer and whether it’s worth a watch in theatres.
Featuring less than 10 actors in total, this whodunnit (a murder mystery where the main focus is the puzzle of identifying the perpetrator, with clues provided before the final reveal) feature four character – Ira (Rasika Dugal), her husband Dr Basukinath aka Basuki, Sanya (Zoha Rahman) and her friends with benefits Rohit (Arjun Mathur).
Ira and her non-romantic, non-expressive ‘Brit’ husband are invited to the former’s actress-friend’s summer house for dinner. Located in a no-network area, the film takes unexpected (but still expectable) turns as secrets are revealed alongside the identity of Lord Curzon. Basuki – who is weird, sceptical and controlling, gets obsessed with knowing what’s in the big wooden trunk aesthetically placed in the living room after Rohit and Sanya joke that it hold the dead body of Lord Curzon. Is Lord Curzon’s body really in the trunk? What secrets are spilled and do they change the equation in he group? Well…
What Works
Rasika Duggall shine (alas, her shoulders aren’t strong enough to carry the film)
What Doesn’t Work
The narrative is all over the place complete with shoddy writing. The film is a drag and feels way longer than 2 hours.
Conclusion
Give it a skip and watch it when it releases on OTT.
