Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders Review

Honey Trehan’s whodunit thriller, Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders released on Netflix today, and it’s sure to keep you glued to your screen as did the first part in the franchise. The sequel follows Inspector Jatil Yadav (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) as he investigates the ruthless massacre of the influential Bansal family – a major media conglomerate in central India.

The dark film begins when six members of the Bansal family are found brutally murdered by a machete in their palatial farmhouse with only one member left alive, Meera Bansal (Chitrangada Singh). Meera – who is the sole survivor of the wealthy family, is also the only eyewitness to the attack. During its 2-hour plus runtime, the makers address several issues including how the media – the fourth pillar of democracy, hides the truth as well as human sacrifices, emotional instability, and more.

Who is the killer? Will Jatil be able to solve the mass murder case before another is killed or injured? Why is he being suggested to change his name. Read our review before deciding whether you should watch the film this weekend.

What Works

Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s nuanced performance is what will keep you hooked to your screen from the very first scene right until he throws a piece of trash in his house’s dustbin. The unpredictability of the plot, right until the last twist, is impressive and engaging.

What Doesn’t Work

Despite its unpredictability, the film does have a few lull moments here and there.

Star Cast

Nawazuddin Siddiqui is a master craftsman and he’s once again proved his acting capabilities and why he’s considered one of the best performers in Bollywood. He aptly shows restrained emotions that only help in highlighting his acting brilliant further. He effortless gets into the skin of the character and brings right amounts of emotion, thrill, humour, and anger to the film.

Chitrangadha Singh feels like a half baked character and that’s owing to how the character is written and not her acting. Radhika Apte – with her very limited, manages to still make her presence felt.

Conclusion

If you love thrillers, especially ones where you have to wait till the very end to know who exactly is the murdered, then Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders needs to be on your to-watch list. From the thrilling narrative to Nawaz’s impeccable performance, do not miss this Netflix show.
