The Ba***ds Of Bollywood REVIEW
Aryan Khan has made his big debut into the film world with the much-awaited Netflix show The Ba***ds Of Bollywood. The series – which features the who who of Bollywood – such as Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and many more, has perfect amounts of humor, action, drama and emotions. This 100% filmy show takes its viewers on an unexpected but truly fulfilling journey.
The show is centred on the lives and careers of two Bollywood debut stars – Aasman Singh (Lakshya) and Karishma Talwar (Sahher Bambba). Aasman is a Delhi ka launda who dreams big, reaches sapno ki nagri Mumbai to fulfil his dreams and become one of Bollywood’s biggest names – not a star, but the aasmaan(sky). He believes that as an actor, it’s his job to do tamashas, making his off-screen life even more interesting and action-filled than his reel-life. Karishma, who was born with a silver spoon, is the daughter of superstar Ajay Talwar (Bobby Deol). Wanting to be known for her talent and not just as a nepo-kid, she stands up for herself and the kind of projects she wants to do.
(Possible Spoilers Ahead) The show incorporates several headline-grabbing moments from real life, including Sidhant Chaturvedi–Ananya Panday’s controversial roundtable confrontation, nepotism, actors going to any length to get roles and even the dark side of the entertainment industry, such as underworld connections and drug use. In the 7 (around 45 minute long) episodes, debutant director Aryan Khan introduces you to both the good and bad sides of Bollywood and how the characters in the show, just real life, are neither black or white but different shades of grey.
Does Aasman manage to make it big in Bollywood? Do he and Karishma get a happily-ever-after just like we see in Bollywood films? What are the personal and professional hurdles Aasman have to overcome in order to success in Mumbai? To know all these answers, and witness some unexpected twists, you need to watch The Ba***ds Of Bollywood on Netflix. And make sure to stick to the end – there’s a surprise in store.
What Works
Aryan Khan’s control over the madness of a story that could have easily spiraled into chaos is commendable. Lakshya’s rawness, Raghav Juyal’s on-point comedy and Bobby Deol’s shrewdness are the highlights of a show that will have you hooked from start to finish.
What Doesn’t Work
The only thing we wish we had more of was longer and some-what connected cameos of the different Bollywood stars who were part of the show.
Technical Analysis
Direction
As a debutant director, Aryan Khan has complete control over the madness that unfolds in The Ba***ds Of Bollywood. He has succeeded in keeping the story in check despite being filled with multiple stories and characters that could have easily spiraled into a disjointed parody. Aryan has a sharp eye, a great sense of humor, and most importantly, a clear voice as a filmmaker, and that’s very clear right from episode one. He’s completely unafraid to take jokes on himself and the industry he he’s been born into and is now making his career in.
Story & Screenplay
Aryan and his co-writers, Bilal Siddiqi and Manav Chauhan have delivered something we really needed – a fresh but entertaining show that while it’s a spoof (to a great extent) doesn’t become caricatured. It has the perfect amounts of masala, laughter, romance and brain rot.
Star Cast
The Ba***ds of Bollywood features an array of talents and an equal number of Bollywood personalities in cameos appearances. After a killer performance in KILL, Lakshya has once more dominated the screen with his performance as Aasman. He deserves a round of applause for once again managing to touch the hearts of he audiences with his rawness. Sahher Bamba’s portrayal as nepo kid Karishma Talwar is both refreshing and convincing though there’s definitely more scope for improvement.
Unlike KILL, Raghav Juyal is a riot in the Netflix series. Juyal has aced as Parvez with his die-hard loyalty and humour. He’s funny, sharp, and the reason for some of the most unexpected drama. Anya Singh impresses as Aasman’s manager, Sanya Ahmed and manages to keep the focus on herself when sharing the screen with her co-stars. Bobby Deol as Ajay Talwar is a force to be reckoned with both owing to his character and his screen presence.
Manish Chaudhari, Manoj Pahwa, Gautami Kapoor, Rajat Bedi, Manish Chaudhari, Arshad Warsi and other members of the supporting cast deliver exactly what’s needed and leave an impression with their limited performances. Mona Singh is a surprise on screen and you need to stick to he very end to know why.
Conclusion
Aryan Khan’s The Ba***ds Of Bollywood is the perfect weekend watch if you love Bollywood. From the get-go, the series will have you hooked with its humour and drama. The emotions of all the lead characters anchors the show and makes it feel real and personal. Do binge watch it and it you can do it with friends and some popcorn, it will make the experience even better.
