Udta Punjab

Anurag Kashyap’s upcoming film ‘Udta Punjab‘ starring Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Diljit Dosanjh had called for a legal battle over the decision of Censor Board. The authorities had ordered approximately 13 changes in the film including the removal of word ‘Punjab’ from the title of the film and this did not go down well with makers. Hence, the team of ‘Udta Punjab’ had challenged the orders of Censor Board in the Bombay High Court. After hearing the justification of the Censor Board over its insistence on deletion of the Punjab word from the title, the High Court carried out the proceedings on this case today.

As per reports, High Court has allowed the film to release with only 1 suggested cut and rest 12 will be set aside. The court has asked the producers of ‘Udta Punjab’ to delete the entire scene that shows Shahid Kapoor’s character urinating in front of a crowd. Further, the judges have asked the Censor Board to not be so critical as we want creative people to survive and grow in this country. Court stated that this approach of CBFC will not work as the generations to come will not be impressed.

The Bombay High Court affirmed that the drug menace is very real and hence the censoring won’t help. It stated, “Sometime to open eyes of people to all this menace, things have to be shown directly.” In its defence, the CBFC stated, “Taking a holistic view of the film after cuts, it does not change the fabric of the film which shows drug menace.” The arguments in the court have come to an end and the verdict on the same will come out on Monday.

Film ‘Udta Punjab’ that revolves around the drug menace prevalent in Punjab has its central characters under the influence of drugs. The film is slated to release on June 17, 2016.
