A while ago, news of veteran actor Dharmendra breathing his last made the headlines. As Bollywood pays him their last respects and prepare to bid him a final good bye, we bring you some lesser known details of the 89 year old superstar.
Dharmendra recalled his difficult early days, revealing that he once lived in a garage because he lacked a proper home in Mumbai during his struggling years. The veteran Bollywood actor recently appeared on the singing reality show Indian Idol 11, where he fondly reminisced about those times when he worked in a drilling firm and faced hardships. His nostalgia was stirred after contestants performed “Kal Ki Haseen Mulaqat Ke Liye,” a song from his 1976 film, Charas.
Dharmendra Recalls Living In A Garage, Working In Drilling Firm
Sharing memories of his struggles, Dharmendra said, “In my early days, I used to live in a garage because I didn’t have a proper house in Mumbai. To survive, I worked in a drilling company where I earned Rs 200, and I did overtime to make some extra money.”
Dharmendra had previously turned emotional on another reality show, Superstar Singer, when a video depicting his journey was played. Reflecting on a bridge he used to visit after school, he emotionally shared, “This is where I used to dream of coming into showbiz. Whenever I go to that bridge, I tell myself, ‘Dharmendra, you’ve become an actor!’”
Hailing from Punjab, Dharmendra dominated Bollywood in the 1970s and 1980s with iconic films like Phool Aur Patthar, Anupama, Seeta Aur Geeta, and Sholay. A recipient of the Padma Bhushan, he has also produced movies such as Ghayal and Yamla Pagla Deewana 2.
His grandson, Karan Deol, made his Bollywood debut last year. Dharmendra attended the film’s trailer launch to support the newcomer. When asked about habits he wouldn’t want Karan to inherit, Dharmendra humorously replied, “He should not drink alcohol. There are many habits, but he understands which ones he shouldn’t adopt from me.”
The film marked the Bollywood debut of actress Sahher Bambba but failed to impress critics and audiences alike. Its title is inspired by Dharmendra’s famous song from the film Blackmail.
