Kamal Haasan extends support to Anti-Sterlite Protest in Tuticorin

Anti-Sterlite Protest in Tuticorin has garnered the support of many eminent celebs. The entire film fraternity in Tamil Nadu condoled the death of nine people in police firing during protests against the Sterlite copper plant here. This was the first case of police firing in Tamil Nadu on protestors where people have died.

South star Kamal Haasan reached Kumarareddiapuram village in Tuticorin district to express solidarity with the protestors and demanded the unit to be shut soon. Mr Haasan, who had recently entered into the political arena with the launch of his party Makkal Neethi Mayyam, asserted that he had not come to Tuticorin for publicity but to express his solidarity with the protesters.

Haasan said injustice had been done to the people of Tuticorin by establishing the Sterlite unit. The Sterlite unit “showed the cruel face of business… showed the greedy face of business”.

Haasan even paid a visit to the General Hospital in Thoothukudi and met with the people injured there. Soon an FIR was lodged against the actor for visiting Thoothukudi‬, despite Section 144 being imposed in the area.(Section 144,is a section of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which prohibits assembly of five or more persons.)

After meeting the victims of police firing, the actor said, “We must know who ordered this firing. It is not me, but the victims who are demanding this. Mere announcement of compensation isn’t a solution. This industry must be shut, and this is what people demand.”

He further added that the central and state governments had not heard the voice of the people and that “the people should make them hear now.”

We shall update you with more on this soon.
