The Karnataka government announced on Wednesday that it would withdraw its previous order. It has now instructed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate potential lapses and negligence by police officials at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport related to the gold smuggling case involving Kannada actor Ranya Rao. Ranya’s stepfather, Ramachandra Rao, is currently the Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation.

Karnataka Govt Withdraws Ranya Rao’s Case From CID Probe

In a follow-up order, it was stated that Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta is already looking into the possible involvement of Ranya’s stepfather. K Ramachandra Rao, a senior officer of DGP rank, in the matter. Gupta’s investigation will concentrate on the facts and circumstances surrounding the misuse of protocol-related services and Rao’s alleged participation in the case.

What Happened With Ranya Rao’s Gold Smuggling Case?

According to an India Today report, the DRI’s arrest memo indicated that Ranya could not provide proof of purchase or declaration for the gold. The recovered gold was valued at Rs 12.56 crore. The court is expected to announce its judgment on March 14. Additionally, the DRI apprehended Tarun Raju, a close associate of Ranya Rao, on Monday due to his alleged involvement in the smuggling operation. A city court has placed him in DRI custody for five days.

Officials confiscated gold bars worth Rs 12.56 crore from Ranya at Kempegowda International Airport. Also, gold jewelry valued at Rs 2.06 crore and Indian currency totaling Rs 2.67 crore during searches at her home.
