Kannada Actress Ranya Rao Breaks Down In Court; Reveals, “I Was Verbally Tortured And Threatened”

During a court appearance, Ranya Rao described experiencing mental trauma while denying claims of being physically tortured, which arose following the circulation of a viral image showing her with dark circles around her eyes. The Karnataka actress arrested for gold smuggling has been ordered to remain in judicial custody for 14 days.

Ranya Rao Reveals Being Verbally Tortured And Threatened

On Monday Ranya Rao clarified that she had not undergone any physical torture in the DRI custody. Rao made the submissions before a special court in Bengaluru. This sought to know if she was physically tortured in custody as reported by NDTV. “I was verbally tortured and threatened. I am traumatised and emotionally broken,” as quoted in Ranya Rao’s statement in Bengaluru court.

On 8 March, while talking to her lawyers, Ranya Rao broke down in court. She said, “I keep thinking why did I get into it. My mind keeps going back to the day at the airport. I cannot sleep…I am having mental trauma,” reported The Indian Express.

What Happened To Kannada Actress Ramya Rao?

Ranya Rao was detained for three days for questioning before being remanded to judicial custody. During her court appearance, investigators revealed that she had made 27 trips to Dubai in the past six months. The court was informed that she had allegedly smuggled 14.2 kg of gold, valued at Rs 12.56 crore, by concealing the gold bars with crepe bandages and tissues around her body. This is as the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) said on Sunday.

Ranya is the stepdaughter of DGP-rank senior IPS officer Ramachandra Rao. The KIADB’s statement comes after reports claimed that a company linked to Ranya Rao was allotted 12 acres of industrial land by the board in 2023.
