Jana Nayagan CBFC Controversy: SC DISMISSES Makers’ Request To Fast-Track Vijay Thalapathy’s Last Film Release; Sends Plea Back To Madras HC

Vijay Thalapathy-led Jana Nayagan faces a legal setback as the Supreme Court declines to expedite the CBFC certification process. Fans are now eagerly awaiting the outcome as the Madras High Court is scheduled to hear the case on January 20. The Tamil superstar-turned-politician’s much-awaited project is caught in a legal tussle, delaying its release and leaving fans in suspense.

SC DISMISSES Makers’ Request To Fast-Track Vijay Thalapathy Led Jana Nayagan Release

On January 15, the Supreme Court refused to fast-track the film’s release. KVN Productions LLP, the film’s producer, had approached the Supreme Court after encountering hurdles with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). They sought clearance for a Pongal release, citing that over 5,000 theatres were already booked and arguing that announcing a release before certification is standard industry practice.

However, the bench, headed by Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Augustine George Masih, was not convinced. They pointed out that the case is already scheduled to be heard by the Madras High Court’s Division Bench on January 20. Justice Datta also noted that the single bench of the High Court had dismissed the matter quickly, within a day. The CBFC Chairperson’s order from January 6, which referred the film to a Revising Committee, had not been challenged.

Why Is Jana Nayagan In Trouble?

Jana Nayagan was touted as Vijay’s final film, generating immense excitement. This comes after he has entered politics with his own party, TVK. A Pongal release on January 9 seemed ideal. But the CBFC’s intervention disrupted those plans.

Madras High Court’s Intervention

On January 9, a single bench of the Madras High Court, led by Justice PT Asha, ruled in favour of the producers. The court criticised the CBFC Chairperson’s move to refer the film “suo motu” to the Revising Committee as unjustified. Justice Asha also condemned the Examining Committee member for changing their stance, warning that such actions could undermine trust in the CBFC’s decisions. The court ordered the CBFC to certify the film immediately. This gave hope that Vijay’s fans might still see the movie on screens for Pongal.

Almost immediately, the CBFC filed an urgent appeal with the Division Bench, which stayed the single bench’s order. The matter has now been adjourned to January 20.

The Division Bench also had pointed remarks for the producers:

• Announcing a release date before CBFC clearance? Not wise.
• Pressuring the court for a quick decision due to a planned release? Not smart either.

Essentially, the court suggested that KVN Productions jumped the gun, attempting to turn a legal issue into a publicity stunt.
