Tamil actor Srikanth has been arrested to judicial custody in connection with a dr*g scandal involving former AIADMK IT Wing member Prasad, following an investigation into a bar brawl. He has been sent to a first-class prison as authorities delve deeper into the case that has sent shockwaves through Chennai’s political and film circles.
Tamil Actor Srikanth Arrested In Dr*g Case
The investigation began with a violent altercation at a private bar in Nungambakkam last month. This led police to uncover a complex network of drug trafficking, illicit financial transactions, and startling confessions from individuals within the film fraternity. Prasad is a former executive of the AIADMK’s IT Wing, was detained after the incident. His seized phone revealed incriminating WhatsApp messages. Further inquiries led to the arrest of Pradeep Kumar, believed to be the drug supplier to Prasad. During interrogation, Pradeep’s statements implicated actor Srikanth, escalating the case to a new level of prominence.
What Do Police Reports Have To Say?
Police reports indicate that Srikanth, who was working on the film Theengarai—produced by Prasad—admitted to using dr*gs during filming. He claimed Prasad supplied him with narcotics under the guise of enhancing his performance. Srikanth was summoned for questioning at Nungambakkam police station, and his blood samples were sent for forensic analysis.
The tests confirmed drug use, leading to Srikanth’s arrest and his designation as the third accused in the case. He appeared before the 14th Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Egmore, which remanded him to judicial custody until July 7. Due to his public profile and health concerns involving his child, the court ordered that he be detained in a first-class facility.
Srikanth Used Dr*gs For Personal Use
Sources within law enforcement reveal Srikanth is suspected of purchasing dr*gs over 40 times. The financial transactions were approximately Rs 4.72 lakh from him to Pradeep via Google Pay, bolstering the prosecution’s case of ongoing involvement. Despite the gravity of the charges, Srikanth maintained during court proceedings that he had not distributed dr*gs, only used them personally. He requested bail, citing his child’s illness and his willingness to cooperate, but the magistrate denied the plea, directing him to approach the special court handling drug offences. A bail application has been filed by his legal team.
About Ongoing Investigations
Investigations are ongoing on multiple fronts, with authorities suggesting the drug supply chain may extend beyond Tamil Nadu, possibly involving a Nigerian national based in Bengaluru. They are also examining potential links to other individuals within the film industry. Prasad, who faces allegations beyond the drug case—including cheating and promising government jobs—remains under scrutiny, with three FIRs filed against him in Nungambakkam and Mylapore police stations.
The Chennai police emphasised that this case is part of a broader effort to combat drug abuse and trafficking within the entertainment sector. They assured that the law will proceed based on evidence and proper legal procedures.
