Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi Opens Up On His Aspiration For Acting

Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi is currently seen in the popular show Laughter Chefs and continues to win people’s hearts with his style and humour. The talented chef is also a good actor and has done a few projects in the past. Sharing more, he says, ”Well, if I get an opportunity for acting, I’ll definitely take it. I have done fiction shows before – ‘Channa Mereya’ – and people loved it. It was on air for nearly eight months. And I loved playing my character. It was probably the first time I played such a character. I also did movies like ‘Bank Chor’ and ‘Love You Lok Tantra’. But they were very short roles. In fact, in Bank Chor, I had a screen time of almost 15 minutes. So, if I get a chance, I will definitely take up fiction or acting for movies.”

Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi Is Extremely Comfortable In Front Of The Camera

Whoever has watched Chef in front of the camera knows that he is extremely comfortable. He explains, ”When it comes to fiction shows, I would say that you have to enact, get into the character, and act according to the character. But when you’re doing cookery shows, you are yourself, and you are just speaking to the audience. So that’s the difference. When you are in a character, you have to behave like the character. And I think I have to learn a lot about that subject. When I did Channa mereya, I remember I was the father of a daughter who was running my dhaba. She used to take my blessings, and I had to get into that character and act accordingly. So that was a little different from what it is. It took some time, but it eventually came. When it comes to cookery shows, it comes naturally. But when you are in a character, it is a little tough, and that is what I think I have to polish more and more.”

In your long, dynamic career, would you like to write an autobiography?

”I would say yes. In a way, something about my life is already written. The Namak Shamak jingle already tells my story. I have also written a book, but it’s more like a management book than a storybook. It talks about my journey as a chef and how I connect management lessons with cooking. If I have to name my autobiography, it would be Namak, Shamak aur Kahaniyan. It is the best name, and I dedicate it to all the artisans.“

Speaking about his inspiration in culinary, Chef says,” Internationally, I look up to chefs like Harry and Leslie Waters, Emeril Lagasse. I love them because of their fun-loving elements, whom you love to watch on television. They make things lighter, light small comedy with great cooking. That’s when I look up to television series chefs. In India, of course, there are many chefs I respect: Chef Satish Arora, Chef Manjit Gill, Madan Lal Jaiswal ji, Qureshi, Imtiaz Qureshi ji, and Sanjeev Kapoor ji.“
