Comedian Sunil Pal recently shared his thoughts on his peers Kapil Sharma and Sunil Grover. When asked about the current landscape of Indian comedy and which comedians remain popular, Sunil said that Kapil and Sunil Grover continue to stay relevant because they constantly reinvent themselves. However, he also mentioned having one issue with Sunil Grover.
Sunil Pal Threw Up Watching Sunil Grover As Gutthi/ Rinku Bhabhi
During a podcast with Siddharth Kannan, Sunil Pal stated, “It’s been 21 years. It’s human nature to want change. You have to accept change over time; otherwise, you can get stuck in a routine and become limited. Both Naveen Prabhakar and Ahsaan Qureshi became targets of this because they didn’t evolve, in my opinion.”
He further added, “In the last 40 years, the only one who truly embodied his era and inspired change is Johny Lever. I am a devoted fan of his. Apart from him, I see a strong force in Kapil Sharma—he’s also changed himself. Sunil Grover, too, has evolved. Over the past 20 years, I’ve seen only about five performers adapt and grow. Most others still rely on market jokes, old mimicry, or haven’t tried anything new.”
Sunil Pal also reflected on his early career experiences, saying, “We worked together a lot back then. His acting as a woman used to make me uncomfortable—I even threw up once just by looking at it. Wearing women’s costumes feels icky to me; I believe that’s not the right way to do comedy. That said, I am a fan of his work. I know some comedians earn crores through vulgarity and abuse, and I had that option too earlier,” he concluded.
For those who may not know, Sunil Grover is renowned for his comedic sketches portraying female characters, most famously Gutthi and Rinku Bhabhi, on Kapil Sharma’s show.
