Varun Dhawan to play Major Dhyan Chand

It is no news that Karan Johar is making a biopic on Dhyan Chand, the one of the greatest Hockey players, under Dharma Productions. After some of the big names like Shah Rukh Khan and Ranbir Kapoor, rumour had it that the role was to be played by Sidharth Malhotra. However, if new reports are to be believed, then the role has now been passed on to Varun Dhawan.

Not many know, but Varun was the first one who was approached to play the role, which he refused at the time citing time and some issues with the script as primary reasons. These were also one of the reasons for the film not taking off soon as both Karan and Varun were not too keen on Rohit Vaid, the one helming the project. However, now that Vaid has won a National award, and has made some changes in the script, equations have changed, and reports say that he will again try and bring Varun on board.

As per Vaid, “The people involved knew that I’d bought the rights of Dhyan Chand and had offered it to them on the condition that I would direct. There was no issue! They only wanted some changes incorporated. I’ve reworked the script along with Agneepath writer Ila Bedi.”

“Shah Rukh Khan showed great interest, but he won’t fit the age group. Ranbir Kapoor is a friend and was also given a narration. He loved the story, but he was already doing another biopic (Sanjay Dutt), so he couldn’t do it,” the director added.

He also shed some light on the story of the biopic, as to what can the people expect. “It took me five years to do research on him as nobody had a clue about him anymore and there’s hardly anything in his autobiography. We spoke to his son Ashok Dhyanchand and to many people in India and Pakistan. What we have now is very exciting,” he said.

Karan Johar had announced this project last year, but there were certain holdups, as mentioned above.
