Batwara 1947, Awarapan 2 Makers Not Confident In Their Films? No Press Shows, No Early Reviews

Whenever a film is set for release, the makers typically organise a special screening for the press the day earlier. While some confidently hold such screenings even 7 or more days before the title releases, most opt to have the media see it the evening before and post their reviews around the time the first show is scheduled to begin. But that’s not the scene in the Hindi belt this week.

Tomorrow, Friday, August 14, two relatively ‘big’ films are releasing – Sunny Deol-led Batwara 1947 and Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2. However, the makers neither film have arranged for the media to see the film. Why? Are the makers unsure of their projects? Do they not want the public to know what’s in store till after they booked their tickets? Well…

Despite being supposed big titles, neither film has managed to create hype around its release. Neither have the songs from the Emraan Hashmi starrer trended on social media nor has the multi-city promotional strategy of Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta made the headlines. They’ve both just there without actually creating waves or making fans go crazy.

Batwara 1947 will not only see Sunny in a genre he dominates – films centred on tension between India and Pakistan due to the 1947 divide, but it will also see Preity make a comeback. Awarapan 2 marks the return of Emraan Hashmi as Shivam Pandit after nearly 20 years. The songs of the first film are still loved and remembered, but the new ones have missed the mark.

Are The Makers Unsure Of Their Films?

Given the low hype, it would make sense for the makers to hold a special screening and have critics share positive reviews of the film. The work of mouth recommendation could work wonders and get fans heading to cinema halls like they did for Mein Vaapas Aunga, Saiyaara and more. But skipping press shows and having critics having to choose between which film to watch at 8 am on Friday morning indicated that either the makers aren’t confident about their project or they know it won’t impress the critics, leading to negative reviews even if they will be liked by the masses.

Whatever the reason, tomorrow will be the litmus test to see if it is a good strategy or no.
