Badhaai Do hit the theatres on February 11. It starred Bhumi Pednekar and Rajkummar Rao in the lead roles. Directed by Harshavardhan Kulkarni, Badhaai Do is a comedy-drama that is about a couple who is in a lavender marriage to hide their sexuality and family pressure on marriage. Bhumi plays a lesbian woman Sumi. In an interview, the actress revealed her mother’s reaction to her romancing a woman on screen.

Bhumi told ETimes that Badhaai Do is definitely a film that needs to be watched together with family. She said, “It’s about celebrating love and acceptance. We have taken the route of humour to talk about something that our society is uncomfortable addressing.” She added that she watched the film for the first time with her mother. On her mom’s reaction, Pednekar said, “She is accepting of one’s choices, yet she has never seen me romance a person from the same gender. After we watched the film, I asked her if she felt different after seeing me romance a woman. She said not at all.”

Bhumi also said that with the film she grew as a person and she feels it helped her evolve and made her a better person. “The takeaway was that we all have a little judgement in us. With this film, mere andar ka jo bhi tha, thoda bahut, woh bhi chala gaya. We discriminate so much against people but I feel so light since I have managed to leave that out of my life,” she added.

Bollywood Bubble’s review read: Badhaai Do makes you feel the struggles, the challenges of Shardul and Sumi but the inconsistency in screenplay makes it difficult to get invested in the characters till the end. The film felt half an hour long but here’s hoping it moves people to ask the right questions.
