The leading contender to direct the film is Ayan Mukerji, who is expected to dive into pre-production after the release of War 2. Over the years, Aditya Chopra has established Dhoom as the biggest franchise in Indian cinema, with instalments Dhoom (2004), Dhoom 2 (2006), and Dhoom 3 (2013) growing stronger each time. According to sources close to the project, Aditya Chopra, along with writer Shridhar Raghavan, has been working to finalise the script of Dhoom 4.

Aditya Chopra’s Dhoom 4 To Be Led By Ranbir Kapoor, Aims For 2027 Release

For over a decade, there have been numerous reports about the return of Dhoom with a fourth instalment, and by 2026, Aditya Chopra is set to bring Dhoom 4 to life. “Aditya Chopra has been closely involved in developing the story and screenplay of Dhoom 4 with Shridhar Raghavan. They are currently working on the story draft that’s worthy of the hype around the reboot with Dhoom 4,” a source revealed to Pinkvilla. The sources also added that Ranbir Kapoor, who will play the lead, is excited to embark on this heist journey on bikes.

“Ranbir is the apt choice for Dhoom 4, and the character is also designed keeping his aura and personality in mind. The new Dhoom film is being designed keeping the global action standards in mind, and the visual palette, as also storytelling, will be very different from the already established YRF Spy Universe,” the source explained.

YRF plans to take Dhoom 4 on floors with Ranbir Kapoor in April 2026. Ayan Mukerji is the frontrunner to direct, with plans to begin deep-diving into pre-production after the release of War 2 around Independence Day 2025. The film is targeted for a 2027 release, with hopes to wrap filming by the end of 2026.
