Today, RajKummar Rao is a name in Hindi cinema that guarantees credibility and authenticity to any project that he is associated with, but things weren’t always the same for the actor. He started his journey in films with a cameo in Run, before he made his debut with Dibakar Bannerjee’s Love Sex Aur Dhokha in 2010. Even after that, including winning a National Award for Shahid, the actor had to struggle a lot to reach where he is today.

There was a time when filmmakers won’t offer him meaty or leading roles and would run away from him, and today they are running behind him to be the face of their films. When pointed out and asked if that makes him feel a sense of pride, RajKummar Rao said, “To be very honest, people who know me they will second that I don’t feel any kind of pride in anything. I am very happy I am getting the kind of work I am getting to do because these are the films I am happy doing, be it HIT, Badhaai Do, Bheed, Monic Oh My Darling, Guns N Gulaabs, Mr and Mrs Mahi, all the work that would be coming now in near future. Apart from that, I don’t sit back and think ki wow main kahaan se aaya hun, nothing. I live everyday as it comes. I am very real in real life. I am not carrying anything which is not me. I am doing this because I love doing this for myself, not for any body else. It was never about chasing fame or money. All I wanted to do was act in movies and play different characters.”

But dealing with the struggle period means having to deal with many rejections. When asked to recall any of them that seem a little ridiculous or funny today, the actor shared, Yeah, of course I was told so many things. You are not tall enough, your built is not right, your eyebrows are not in a certain shape and very weird things. And I was like what, what about acting? wo kisko chahiye. I am glad Dibakar wanted that and Atul Mongia saw that, the casting director of my first film. That’s the thing which will take you forward and nothing else. Eventually, the talent stays and nothing else remains.”
