This month, the film English Vinglish, which marked the acting comeback for late superstar Sridevi and the directorial debut for Gauri Shinde, completed a decade. Gauri announced her arrival in the industry with a heart touching story of a mother who embarks on a journey to learn English to earn back respect for herself and the film emerged a critical and commercial success. To celebrate the film and Sridevi, the team of English Vinglish got together for an evening.

After English Vinglish, Sridevi did one more film, the revenge thriller Mom, which earned her a posthumous National Award for Best Actress as she untimely passed away on February 24, 2018. However, before that, on October 4, 2017, Sridevi had posted a picture with Gauri on her Instagram with which she had written “Coming soon….. (sic)”, increasing hopes of the audience. During the 10 years celebration of English Vinglish, Gauri revealed the story behind it.

A fan asked the director if that picture meant that they were collaborating again for a project, and if it was a sequel to English Vinglish. Responding to that with a smile, Gauri said, “Not English Vinglish 2 because both of us were very scared that a sequel to be made on this, we thought it should be untouched. So, that wasn’t the plan and it was something else. It was tempting but both of us were quite clear that no, at least not now, because it feels like we are touching something (special). Sometimes you can’t repeat the same thing. Magic happens once.”

When prodded to answer if it meant there was some other project being discussed, Gauri answered in the affirmative saying, “It was just another idea brewing with us. I of course wanted to work with her and I was waiting for an idea which was worth her while. I mean in just my desperation to work with her, I couldn’t just have any idea. It had to be something worthy of her, which was worth her while. Though she was so sweet and even when I made Dear Zindagi, she said I will come as your assistant. She was so lovely and sweet and I told her Sri, come and coach the actors. So, we used to talk about quite a few ideas and this was something that we really wanted to do and work with each other.”
