Late Sridevi’s daughter Janhvi Kapoor, who will star in Dostana 2, is prepared for the comparisons that will be drawn between her and Priyanka Chopra’s performance, despite the stark contrast between them and the two films. The film also co stars Kartik Aaryan and debutante Lakshya in the follow up to the 2008 hit film which also featured Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham.

Dostana is directed by Tarun Mansukhani, revolves around the story of two heterosexual men [Abhishek and John] based abroad who pretend to be queer to share an apartment with a woman [Priyanka]. Two men were naturally head over heels for her. But there is a twist in Dostana 2 in which we will see Janhvi and Kartik as siblings falling for the same man, played by Lakshya, provided that Janhvi’s onscreen brother is actually a gay. This film has been directed by debutante Collin D’Cunha, who has co-written it with Navjot Gulati, Sumit Arora and Rishabh Sharma.

It’s been more than a decade since romantic-comedy Dostana hit the theatres, but PC’s performance in the film is still fresh in the audience’s memory. Janhvi, in a recent chat with the Indian Express, addressed the pressure she feels stepping into a popular franchise which is helmed and remembered by such big names. The actor, who is celebrating her birthday today confessed that the bar set by the Desi Girl PeeCee is so huge that all she can do is pray she gets “somewhere close to her.”

Jahnvi also added, “Priyanka Chopra was iconic in Dostana. So, there is a responsibility, but it’s another film, completely different. So, I don’t know what I can do. All that I can do [about] the bar, the standard that she has set, [is to try] reach for the stars I guess. Pray to God and hope that [I] get somewhere close.”

Janhvi will next be seen in ‘Roohi’, which is set to hit the big screens on March 11 this month. It also stars Rajkummar Rao and Varun Sharma in the lead roles. The upcoming horror-comedy will become the first film to arrive in theatres after the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting allowed cinema halls nationwide to operate at full capacity from February 1 with COVID-19 safety protocols put in place. The film is based on the lines of the 2018 hit film ‘Stree’, which featured Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao in lead roles.
