Actress Janhvi Kapoor recently opened up about the difficult time she went through after losing her mother, Sridevi, and how the media made her pain even harder to deal with. Janhvi said she held back many of her emotions because she did not want them to be turned into sensational headlines or memes. Her words come at a time when she has also been disturbed by how the media covered the recent passing of veteran actor Dharmendra.
Janhvi Calls Out Voyeuristic Journalism
Janhvi criticised what she called a growing “voyeuristic journalism,” where personal grief is turned into public drama. She said to Barkha Dutt, “The voyeuristic nature of journalism today, of media culture today, has single-handedly contributed to the complete derailment of human morality.” Recalling the period after Sridevi’s death, she shared, “I don’t know if anyone can imagine what it’s like to lose someone that close to you and see it become a meme.”
Talking about how Dharmendra’s death was covered, Janhvi said the pattern is repeating again and again, and she fears it may only get worse. She pointed out that the problem is not only with the media but also with viewers who reward such content. “Every time we watch these videos or click on such headlines, we are incentivize this culture,” she explained.
Janhvi said that earlier there used to be sensitivity and empathy, but now there is a loss of basic decency in the race for TRPs, views, and likes. Calling it a “modern-day crisis,” she expressed sadness over how people find entertainment in someone else’s suffering.
She admitted that the grief and anger she experienced after her mother’s death still stay with her. This is why, she said, “ignorance is bliss,” as it helps her avoid reliving that pain again.
