Pap Agencies File CINTAA Complaint against Jaya Bachchan

Jaya Bachchan’s recent critical comments about paparazzi have sparked widespread controversy, prompting several agencies to consider filing complaints with CINTAA and explore a possible boycott. Photographers have voiced their displeasure, calling her remarks insulting and urging the establishment of a code of conduct to foster mutual respect.

Paps To File Complaint With CINTAA After Jaya Bachchan’s ‘Gandi Pant’ Remarks

Several Bollywood paparazzi agencies are preparing to lodge a formal complaint with CINTAA after discussions about her comments. They feel her remarks, which questioned the background and attire of photographers, demean their work. Some syndicates are even contemplating a boycott of Jaya Bachchan. Manav Manglani, who manages a photo syndicate of about 20 photographers, told Mid-Day, “She doesn’t want to be clicked; we won’t click her. Jayaji isn’t someone who attracts much attention anyway. If she is with her family and willing to pose happily, then we may photograph her.”

Varinder Chawla On Jaya Bachchan’s ‘Gandi Pant’ Remarks

Veteran photographer Varinder Chawla, who employs a team of 15, echoed similar sentiments. “Her comments are uncalled for. We deserve some self-respect. We haven’t disrespected her. It’s unfair for someone privileged to insult those doing honest work. Her comments need a strong response. Why couldn’t she have a dialogue with us? We always listen. For example, Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt asked us not to photograph their daughter Raha, and we respected that.”

Varinder On Paps Unity

In addition to considering a formal complaint, these agencies, in collaboration with CINTAA, aim to develop a code of conduct addressing both actor concerns about intrusion and paparazzi concerns about mistreatment. Chawla highlighted the challenges posed by unruly fans masquerading as photographers, leading to conflicts and crowding at events. He emphasised the urgent need for formal guidelines governing interactions between celebrities and the media. “There’s no unity among paps today; anyone with a camera is often grouped with us, which harms our reputation. Fans sometimes pose as photographers and behave inappropriately. We want to facilitate a meeting with actors to discuss these issues. We previously requested Suniel Shetty to help organise this,” he said.

Viral Bhayani On Jaya Bachchan’s ‘Gandi Pant’ Remarks

Leading paparazzo Viral Bhayani also weighed in, criticising the unregulated nature of paparazzi culture and addressing Jaya Bachchan’s comments about photographers’ attire. “I respect Jaya Bachchan more than Amitabh because I’m straightforward like her—I say what’s in my heart, which sometimes gets me into trouble. She’s been kind to me, but she’s also snapped at me. Her mood affects how she reacts. Whenever I politely asked for a picture, she never refused. Her statement about disrespectful comments by paps is partly true. In the early days of Indian paparazzi, we had ethics and responsibility; we maintained decorum and patience.”

He continued, “Today’s young photographers lack patience and often scream or get anxious when celebrities are late. The culture isn’t regulated, and many kids just take out their phones and pretend to be paparazzi, which is damaging. Some even click on women in inappropriate situations, creating a bad image for us. We’re interested in good content and respectful coverage, including dignified reporting on funerals. We need a moral code within the community to ensure responsible coverage. For example, I have a strict rule: no selfies with celebrities, and if someone is caught posing with a celebrity inappropriately, they’re out of my team.”

Viral Bhayani On Jaya’s Attire & Poverty Remarks

Bhayani also responded to Jaya Bachchan’s remarks about poverty and attire. “Anyone can be poor—everyone works hard. Don’t underestimate anyone. I come from a humble background myself. We change our lives through hard work and determination. And it’s not right to comment on someone’s clothing or appearance. Jaya Bachchan is active on social media but prefers not to be filmed. That’s her choice, and we respect it. If she ever feels comfortable with being filmed, we’ll happily do so. There’s no ban on her or her family,” he explained.

What Did Jaya Bachchan Say?

At the ‘We The Women’ event in Mumbai earlier this week, Jaya Bachchan expressed her frustration with paparazzi, saying, “Yeh gande gande pant pehen ke, mobile leke [aa jaate hai]… They think that because they have a mobile, they can take your picture, say what they want. The kind of comments they pass!” Her pointed remarks, which many industry voices labelled as “elitist,” have now escalated the situation.
