Kangana Ranaut REACTS To Sharmila Tagore’s Vande Mataram Remarks

The discussion over ‘Vande Mataram’ has resurfaced, focusing on its role as India’s National Song and its differences from the National Anthem, ‘Jana Gana Mana’. Written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in the 1870s and featured in his novel Anandamath, the song became a rallying cry during India’s freedom movement. Its first two stanzas celebrate the land’s natural beauty, while the subsequent four invoke Hindu goddesses like Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati.

The current debate centers on whether all verses should be treated equally, especially since some include references to Hindu deities. Critics argue that while the song embodies India’s spirit and the freedom struggle, the religious references might be difficult for individuals from certain faiths to accept. Kangana Ranaut REACTS To Sharmila Tagore’s Vande Mataram Remarks

Veteran actress Sharmila Tagore expressed her perspective, noting that many people believe in one God rather than many, and therefore some portions of the song may be challenging for monotheists. She suggested that the first two stanzas are more universally acceptable, whereas references to deities like Kali or Durga could be problematic for some. She emphasized the importance of unity among India’s diverse religious communities.

Kangana Ranaut responded to Sharmila’s views by highlighting the artistic and metaphorical nature of poetry and song. She appreciated Sharmila’s sincerity but argued that ‘Vande Mataram’ is more than a religious invocation. It symbolizes the spirit of awakening and strength, akin to the Shakti concept in Hinduism. Kangana cited Swami Vivekananda’s words to illustrate that references to Shakti should be understood as expressions of inner strength rather than solely religious references. She urged for a broader, inclusive understanding, advocating to move beyond religious divisions and embrace the song as a patriotic symbol.

While ‘Jana Gana Mana’ is designated as India’s National Anthem, ‘Vande Mataram’ holds the status of the National Song and remains an integral part of India’s historical and cultural identity, especially connected to the independence movement.
