Filmmaker Karan Johar bared his heart and soul in his biography ‘An Unsuitable Boy’. He has received praises from many people for coming out of the closet and accepting his orientation. But, not all responses have been hunky-dory for the filmmaker. The LGBTQ community has not taken kindly to certain things said by him in the biography. The filmmaker has said that he could possibly be jailed for his sexual orientation in a country like India, and this statement has not gone down well with the LGBT community. They believe that his statement may instill more fear in the minds of people and they may fear coming out of the closet or talk about their sexuality openly.
A well-known LGBT activist, Pallav Patankar spoke to a popular tabloid, “If an uneducated person in a remote Indian village comes and tells me that they are scared of coming out, I’d take it, but this coming from somebody with a stature as big as Karan’s, I feel let down. He should be coming out as an empowered and powerful individual and actually make a difference for those helpless people living in villages. People who were earlier considering coming out will now sit and think twice, worried that an FIR might be involved – but this is baseless. You won’t be arrested for coming out.”
LGBT activist, Harish Iyer also said, “Though his closet is made of transparent glass, I defend Karan’s right to not spell the three words out. Karan Johar doesn’t owe a coming out to anybody. We have no right to assume it is easy for him if we have not walked in his shoes. But yes, no one can be arrested for being gay. His fears are baseless, and just as anyone who is scared would need a friend to counsel, Karan needs one too.”
Humsafar Trust has also issued a statement saying, “To come out is Karan’s personal choice but he shouldn’t misinform. His present statement encourages homophobia and gay bashing to bully the LGBTQ community in private and public spaces.”
According to law, serious action is taken against homosexual intercourse and this could possibly be the reason behind KJo’s fearful stance on the issue.
