Koffee With Karan 8: Karan Johar reveals how Dharmendra reacted when he pitched the kiss scene idea to him for Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani

Karan Johar returned to the director’s chair after 7 years with Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. It starred Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi. Talking about Dharmendra, in particular, he played Jaya Bachchan’s husband, Ranveer Singh’s grandfather in RARKPK. The veteran actor delivered a terrific performance in KJo’s film. Dharmendra’s kiss scene with co-star Shabana Azmi grabbed a lot of attention.

Now, on Koffee With Karan season 8, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol reacted to their father’s onscreen kiss. That’s not all, Karan revealed how Dharmendra reacted when he was told about the kiss in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani for the first time.

Bobby said, “I love the film. Everyone was so good. Ranveer Singh did an awesome job and I am a big fan of Alia. So, she is always amazing. And then, you chose dad. I’m not saying it because he’s my father he was magical as that character. We joke around saying Papa kissed on screen and all that. Everyone says that he’s so cute.” Adding to that, Sunny said, “My dad can do whatever he likes and he gets away with it.”

Karan recalls telling Dharmendra ji about the kiss

Karan revealed, “When I narrated it to him, I was a bit shy and awkward because I felt because he is a senior actor. I have so much love and respect for him. So, I went to him and said, ‘Dharam ji, ye situation hai. Aap milte hai Shabana ji (This is the situation and you meet Shabana ji) se and its romantic and then it ends and culminates in a kiss. So he says, ‘Haan’ (Okay). So then I took a beat. He said, ‘Haan toh problem kya hai?’ (Okay so what is the problem?). He said, ‘Maine bohot kiya hai.’ (I’ve done it many times). So I said, ‘Okay’. The shooting happened. Everybody else around had made a bigger deal about it than them. Because they are true artists.”

Karan shares an interesting anecdote about Dharam ji

The filmmaker then shared a fun anecdote about Dharmendra from the sets of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani and said, “I saw him on set. He used to love doing his videos on the side. And he used to love looking at his images. I just found it absolutely endearing. And he’s so, at this age, so concerned about his close-up. He used to come and tell me, ‘Tell the DOP that the light needs to fall on this manner, this is the profile I prefer. And I used to say, “Yes, I got it.”

He continued, “So, when Shabana ji came and the two had a scene together. Shabana ji said, ‘We have a problem.’ I said, ‘What’s the problem?’. She said, ‘Dharam ji and I have the same profile issue. So, I know that out of seniority, you’ll have to choose Dharam ji. But make sure with Alia and Ranveer, it’s preference on me.’ I said okay done.”
