LoveYappa actress Khushi Kapoor has officially begun shooting for the much-anticipated sequel to Mom, a film that originally starred her late mother Sridevi in an award-winning performance. According to reports, the sequel, reportedly titled Mom 2, has gone on floors at Noida International Film City, and Mom 2 marks Khushi Kapoor in her first major leading role following her debut in The Archies.
Khushi Kapoor Steps Into Sridevi’s Legacy With Mom 2
The film’s shoot began this week with principal photography underway in Noida. Khushi Kapoor is expected to lead the project alongside cast members including Karishma Tanna and Jisshu Sengupta, under the production banner of Boney Kapoor. Mom 2 reunites several key members of the original film’s creative team, signalling a direct continuation of its storytelling tradition.
The original Mom holds significant emotional weight in Indian cinema. Sridevi’s portrayal of a mother seeking justice for her assault-survivor stepdaughter earned her the 2021 National Film Award for Best Actress, the first such award in her career and one she received posthumously. Her performance was widely regarded as powerful and transformative, bringing attention to issues of trauma, justice and institutional failure. Khushi’s casting in the sequel is being viewed as both a professional milestone and a tribute to her mother’s legacy.
A source involved with the production told NDTV that Mom 2 will retain the original’s core themes of emotional resilience and moral complexity while expanding its narrative to explore the fallout of trauma and the pursuit of justice against systemic odds.
About Mom
Mom (2017) was directed by Ravi Udyawar and produced by Boney Kapoor. Sridevi starred as Devki, a mother whose stepdaughter is brutally assaulted. When the legal system fails to deliver justice due to a lack of evidence, Devki takes matters into her own hands, setting off a chain of events that test her moral code and emotional limits.
The film’s cast also included Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Akshaye Khanna, Sajal Aly, and Adnan Siddiqui. The original received critical acclaim for its performances, writing and direction, and Sridevi’s award cemented Mom as one of the decade’s landmark Hindi films.
With shooting now underway on Mom 2, expectations are high for a film that both honours Sridevi’s legacy and charts fresh emotional territory through Khushi Kapoor’s lead performance.
