The entire nation is in mourning as the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar passed away. She was 92 years old and breathed her last at 8:12 am today at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. She was one the most celebrated singers of the country and an idol to the world. So as a mark of respect to the Nightingale of India, a public holiday has been declared in Maharashtra by the government.

A statement from the chief minister’s office (CMO) informed, “The state government has declared a public holiday in the state on Monday, February 7, 2022, to mourn the demise of Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar.”

Lata Mangeshkar will be given state honours as her last rites will be taking place at Shivaji Park. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is said to arrive at 5:45 pm for the funeral of the late singer.

Talking about the reason for her death, Dr Pratit Samdani, who was treating the singer at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital said in a statement revealing the reason of her death, “It is with profound grief that we announce the sad demise of #LataMangeshkar at 8:12 am. She has died because of multi-organ failure after more than 28 days of hospitalisation post #COVID19: Dr Pratit Samdani, who was treating her at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital
