During a recent chat, Samay opened up about the backlash and the financial setback he faced once things for heated. In fact, the comedian admitted he feared bankruptcy like that Amitabh Bachchan went through during the late 1990s.
Samay Raina On Fears Post India’s Got Latent Controversy
During a recent interview with Dostcast, Samay Raina spoke at length about fearing bankruptcy post the entire India’s Got Latent controversy. The stand-up comedian said, “I lost all the upcoming episodes because everyone was scared and didn’t want their episode to be uploaded. I also lost the sponsors for those episodes. I had already received their payments and invested them in fixed deposits;I had to break those FDs and return the money.” He noted, “I was in a mess.”
Samay continued, “I had several projects lined up and had even shot for ads, but they asked for their money back. I had also signed a deal with BookMyShow, where they had given me an advance for the entire tour, and all that money was already invested.” Talking about living in constant fear, the comedian added, “I was extremely scared. At that time, I didn’t know what I would do. I knew no brand would come on board. My biggest fear was that I would go broke and fall into debt, like what happened with Amitabh Bachchan.
India’s Got Latent Controversy
For those who aren’t aware, the controversy around India’s Got Latent arose after a clip from the show went viral. In this clip, guest Ranveer Allahbadia was seen asking a contestant an inappropriate question about parents and s*x, triggering massive online trolling, that also resulted in offline backlash. The remark led to multiple FIRs being filed against the comedian and all present on the show. Following the outrage, Raina took down all episodes of his show from YouTube and said he would cooperate with authorities. The incident also took a personal toll on him, leading to massive stress and anxiety.
Talking about Amitabh Bachchan’s bankrupcy, Amitabh Bachchan faced serious financial losses in the late 1990s mainly after his company, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL), collapsed. The actor was reportedly in debt of around Rs 90 crores at the time.
