After Priyanka Chopra depicting the role of world champion and Olympic bronze medallist Mary Kom from Manipur in the boxer’s biopic, we now have Shahid Kapoor following the same path. The ‘Padmaavat’ star has signed up a biopic on Manipuri boxer Dingko Singh but little did he know that he will soon face the wrath of netizens.

The netizens had taken to social media to express their ire as to why a north eastern was not chosen to play the boxer.

Finally, the actor has reacted to the negativity.  In an interview to Hindustan Times, Shahid said, “I was surprised, we are one country! I was born in Delhi, I live in Mumbai. I’ve played Tommy Singh, a Punjabi (in Udta Punjab; 2017), a Kashmiri boy (in Haider; 2016), now I’m playing Sushil Kumar Pant (Batti Gul Meter Chalu)… No one from these states seemed to have any problem… I think we should rise above all this. To me, representing someone as who he is as a person rather than what he looks like is more relevant. I’m doing the film because I find his journey inspiring.”

He further added that it is important for us as people to get over things that separate us from each other, like colour, race and background. Instead, he wants to represent new and different people from as many communities as possible.

For the uninitiated, Dingko Singh’s full name is Ngangom Dingko Singh and he hails from Manipur. He was the first and only Asian gold medalist boxer from India in the Bantamweight category. Also, in 2013, the boxer was honoured with Padma Shri.

On the work front, Shahid Kapoor will soon start work on his next a remake of Telugu hit flick ‘Arjun Reddy’. The movie also features Kiara Advani playing the role of Shahid’s love interest.
