Shekhar Suman

Shekhar Suman has voiced support for education reform activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on an indefinite hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar before being taken to Safdarjung Hospital by Delhi Police on Saturday morning after his health reportedly deteriorated. Suman addressed Wangchuk’s protest during the latest episode of Shekhar Tonite, which aired hours before the police action.

He said, “Social Activist Sonam Wanghcuk ji Kai dino se Jantar Mantar par Shiksha Mantri Dharmendra Pradhan ke istife ke liye anshan par baithe hain. Main hairaan hoon yeh dekh ke ki koi hairaan kyun nahin? Ek insaan desh aur samaaj ki behteri ke liye anshan par baitha hai, vidyarthiyon ke bhavishya ke liye anshan par baitha hai, shiksha ke charmaraate dhaanche ko sambhaalne ke liye anshan par baitha hai, aur vyavastha chain se leti hui hai. Woh vyavastha jo na sirf goongi, behri aur samvedanheen hai, balki tang dil, sang dil aur bedil hai. Thake hue urjaheen shareer mein bhale hi shakti na ho, lekin desh ke laakhon yuvaon ki woh taakat hai. Aur gaur se dekha jaaye, to hum sab zinda laashon mein woh ek akela jeevit hai. Main hairaan hoon yeh dekh ke ki koi hairaan kyun nahin?”

Hrithik Roshan

Hrithik shared his support on social media late Friday night, re-sharing a video posted by Lisa Ray featuring Wangchuk. In the clip, Wangchuk questions the public silence over alleged exam paper leaks and highlights that over 20 students have taken their own lives. He emphasises the impact of rigged exams, warning, “And even those examinations are rigged. So, it means a lot for those young souls and their families. But also it means a lot for you, because the doctors who will treat you and your children are going to be those who cheated, were never good for becoming a doctor. These engineers will build the buildings in which your grandchildren will be buried alive.”

He added, “If we don’t take action today, we are ‘condemned’ to keep dying like animals.” Hrithik’s support made him the first major star to openly endorse Wangchuk’s stance.

Shatrughan Sinha

Veteran actor and politician Shatrughan Sinha also praised his daughter, saying, “My darling daughter makes me more proud today,” as he urged the government to intervene. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Shatrughan described Wangchuk as a “climate activist” and “education reformer” fighting peacefully for students affected by the NEET leak.

He highlighted Wangchuk’s failing health and called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and authorities to fulfill his demands, ending with, “Save Wangchuk!”

Sonakshi Sinha

Sonakshi Sinha expressed her support, saying, “I’ve never made a public statement like this before, but I can’t stay silent any longer. We all know Sonam Wangchuk. We know what he has done for the country, his achievements, and the many honours he has received. For the past 18 days, he has been on a hunger strike without food. And why? Because he is fighting for the future of children, a future he believes is being pushed towards ruin.”

Sonakshi Sinha explained, “I’ve never given a statement out like this, but today we can’t ignore him. Sonam Wangchuk. We all know him. We know what he has done for our country.” She criticised the lack of response from authorities, questioning, “Why is nobody listening? Nobody cares. Nobody is open for a dialogue.” She concluded, “Main koi anti-national nahi hu,” acknowledging her remarks might attract criticism.

Vivek Oberoi

Vivek Oberoi also shared his thoughts, saying he prefers to stay away from political debates. However, he believes in the importance of free expression. “Yaar main abhineta hu, neta nahi hu. Toh main political cheezon pe dhyaan nahi deta hun. Hum toh observe karte hai, seekhte hai,” he stated.

When asked about Wangchuk’s hunger strike, Vivek added, “Observe ye kiya hai ki ye bhi ek nayi cheez thi aur mujhe lagta hai ek healthy democracy mein har awaaz ko apni jagah milti hai. Ye logo ne agar apni awaaz vyakt ki hai toh ye healthy democracy ka sign hai.”

Kiran Rao

In a show of solidarity, the filmmaker has changed her Instagram display picture to an image featuring Sonam Wangchuk with the message, “I Support Sonam.” In her note, Kiran Rao wrote, “I stand in solidarity with Sonam Wangchuk, Abhijeet Dipke, the CJP, and all the citizens of this country, young and old, who are protesting for the rights of our students. My salaams to Sonam ji, Neha, Maneesh, Ameen and all the others for undertaking a hunger strike to make sure that justice is served. Our nation is indebted to you for shaking us out of our apathy and reminding us that every voice counts.”

She added, “It is so distressing to witness the complete silence that this hunger strike has been met with, even after 19 days. What will it take for those in power to listen to the people?… it is shocking and inhumane. I urge the government to enter into a dialogue with the protestors, to understand the pain of the students, and end this impasse. We the people have a right to be heard. #sonamwangchuk #neet #cockroachjanataparty.”
