Lust Stories 3 Review

When Lust Stories debuted on Netflix in 2018, it skillfully opened conversations around female desire, pleasure, and the still-taboo subject of sex. The third instalment has finally released today on Netflix and it stays true to normalising talks about sex, human emotions, lust, desire and more similar feelings and themes. While the buzz around Lust Stories 3 may not have been as high as those of the first two anthology films, it stays true to its core – talking about desire in a woman’s life, how females feel about sex and more.

Created/Directed by names such as Vikramaditya Motwane, Kiran Rao, Shakun Batra, and Vishal Bhardwaj, the stories and the way they are presented are completely different from each other but still successfully stick to the themes of pleasure, pain and passion. Add to that the cracking chemistry between the leads – especially Ali Fazal-Radhika Madan and Aditi Rao Hydari-Siddharth, and you are served a pipping hot dish that’s sure to leave you sweating from its heat and spice.

What Works

The chemistry between the actors, especially Ali Fazal-Radhika Madan and Aditi Rao Hydari-Siddharth are top notch. The writing and execution is enticing and exciting enough to keep you glued to your phone for nearly 3 hours.

Story

Vikramaditya Motwane’s story – starring Konkona Sen Sharma, Abhishek Banerjee, Radhika Apte and Vijay Varma, revolves around two married couples and the women feel undesired by their spouses. The ladies – both sexually and emotionally unhappy, decide to turn a birthday trip to a resort in Khandala into something spicy and unexpected. But does their games – especially one involving some sensual scenes with the other’s husband, get them satisfaction?

Kiran Rao’s film is set in Mumbai and is something that today’s youth may relate to more than those over 35. Starring Gurfateh Pirzada and Sana Thampi, this story is more chaotic than it’s steamy. It follows a pizza delivery/drug dealer and a nail technician as they fall for each other after seeing each other in the street. Their sudden attraction leads to several impulsive decision and steamy scenes. But do these young ‘lust’ birds get a happy ending or does erotic time behind close doors make them blind to the harsh relaity of our world.

Shakun Batra’s film starring Radhika Madan and Ali Fazal as Sailee and Varun is a something people envision when they say they are heads-over-heels in love with someone come true. The story – that overflows with intimacy, public sex and emotions that’s sure to light up an entire city, follows Varun and Sailee as their divorce case proceeds but their hands keep finding their way to undress each other. With love still in the year despite failed communication, will their lust mend their relationship or will be a curse?

Vishal Bhardwaj’s poetic rendition of lust is something all together. The steamiest of stories, the film stars Aditi Rao Hydari as a (only for her husband) sultry lady and Siddharth as a very sexy desi doctor who wants to please his wife. Aside from being a teacher’s aid and someone writing a thesis to become a doctor, Aditi is also a closeted writer whose stories are enough to make you sweaty and hot (down there – wink!). Bhardwaj’s story – while overflowing with desire that one would read a Mills And Boon, is still deeper than just lust, love and respect.

Star Cast

Konkona Sen Sharma and Radhika Apte are effortless and shine thanks to their comic timing as wwell as chemistry with each other. Vijay Varma and Abhishek Banerjee are good, but are in the shadows of the women – these ladies truly steal the show.

Gurfateh Pirzada and Sana Thampi have done a good job, however, they seem to be overshadowed by veteran stars. Talking about their performances, Pirzada’s performance is commendable especially how quickly he switches between a lover boy, drug dealer and a dutiful son. Thampi is sultry and makes sure she has you attention everytime she’s on camera.

Ali Fazal and Radhika Madan ace their characters and beautifully bring out the complexities of the relationship. Be it the nok-jhok of a married couple, the uncontrollable lust fantastic or the toxicity that follows when you are unhappy with your spouse, the duo seem raw and unfiltered. They do an amazing job in portraying lust while still being young, mature and chaotically all over the place.

Aditi Rao Hydari shines brighter than the sun as the playful but mischief Saira who keeps her desires and imaginations hidden from the world. Siddharth as the naive but attentive Badru equally steals the scene (though it’s very difficult). Aditi and Siddharth’s chemistry off screen seeps on-screen and adds more layers and emotions to the story.
