The Elephant Whisperers bags Best Documentary Short Subject at Oscars 2023, becomes FIRST Indian production to win in the category

It’s time to celebrate as The Elephant Whisperers, directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and produced by Guneet Monga, has won an Oscar. The Elephant Whisperers has won Best Documentary Short Subject at the 95th Academy Awards. The Elephant Whisperers team is on cloud nine.

Well, what makes this award special is that The Elephant Whisperers is the first Indian film to win an Academy Award in this category. Earlier, The House That Ananda Built and An Encounter With Faces competed for Best Documentary Short in 1969 and 1979 respectively.

As India made history with the win, Guneet Monga expressed her happiness in a statement that read, “This is an incredibly powerful and historical moment. We as two women from India, stood on that global stage making this historical win. I’m so proud of this film, this moment and proud of my amazing team at Sikhya Entertainment, that an independent production house from India has made the history to be the first ever Indian film by an Indian production to win an Oscar.”

Guneet added, “My heart is racing with all the joy, love, excitement in the moment. I’m so grateful to Kartiki, the wonderful visionary that she is. Netflix gave us the biggest stage in the world and supported us n believed in us all the way. Today I can say, the future for Indian cinema is audacious, the future is here and not to forget the future is truly female!”

Guneet also shared a post on her Instagram. She shared a picture of their winning moment and wrote in the caption, “Tonight is historic as this is the first ever Oscar for an Indian production, India’s Glory with 2 women. Apart from this, RRR song Naatu Naatu also won an award for Best Original Song at Oscars 2023.
