Yami Gautam left a lasting impression with her powerful performance in her 2025 film, Haq. She starred alongside Emraan Hashmi under the direction of Suparn Verma. Although the film didn’t perform well at the box office during its theatrical release, it achieved massive success after premiering on Netflix. The industry widely praised Yami for her nuanced portrayal in this courtroom drama. This was followed by asking Yami Gautam if she gets questioned for doing political films. Scroll down toread what she said.
Yami Gautam Opened Up On Doing Political Films
Yami, who graced the News18 Rising Bharat Summit 2026 stage on February 27, spoke about choosing different scripts that are political or agenda-based. On being asked if people have questioned her choices after she started doing political films. She said, “I think iss shabd ke alag meanings hai, koi propaganda kehta hai, koi nationalist kehta hai. Main kehti hu ki har ek film, writer aur director ki sachai hai, kahin na kahin ek unka khud ka experience hai. Agar aap vo sachai nahi jaante, that means you have no idea what propaganda is. If we are talking about Article 370, aisa kya hai usme jo hum jhutla sakte hai. Agar aap Haq ki baat kare, mujhe jis tarah ke personal messages aaye hai…not from a certain community but from most of the women across, how is that propaganda, or Uri?”
She further continued, “Was that not a reality? Don’t we deserve, don’t we feel proud in dedicating something, whatever we can in our might, to our Indian army, to our country, to the unsung heroes of our nation? Toh jahan mujhe ye opportunity milti hai, I take pride in it. Mujhe iss baat se koi dikat nahi hai, koi kuch bhi kahe. Mujhe farak padhta hai ki meri audience kya kehti hai, meri conscience kya kehti hai. Meri conscience kehti hai, humara pura haq hai wahi kaam karne ka jisse ek lagao ho, jo dil se nikle aur jo humari sachai ho. Kahin baar hum aisa bhi kaam karte hai, which is far away from the truth, which is a fantasy. Vo bhi sahi hai aur ye bhi sahi hai.”
Yami Gautam On What True Cinema Is
Yami, who has headlined films such as Article 370 and Haq, emphasised that cinema ultimately stands on craft and conviction. “Infact, someone messaged also that keeping politics aside, we could not deny that whatever our political inclination might be, but this is a well made film, chaahe woh Article 370 ho, ya Haq ho, and it did made us question that what we are believing is that right? Or let’s look at it in another way also.”
For the actor, the power of cinema lies in its ability to provoke thought rather than dictate conclusions. “And I think that’s the power of cinema somewhere, and that’s the power of truth jo bohot transparent hota hai. Camera bahut transparent hota hai. Woh ek bareeki pakad leta hai, woh ek nafs na ki sirf ek performer ki, but of that writer and that intention of that writer and the director ki woh kya hai.”
Yami Gautam Reveals If Choosing Political Films Cost Her Professionally
Yami Gautam addressed whether her choice of politically charged films ever cost her professional opportunities. Responding to the question — “Kabhi aapke saath aisa nahi hua ki certain film makers said main aapko cast karta, but you did that film toh uske baad I don’t want to cast you?” — Yami offered a candid reflection.
“Not off late. Shayad ho sakta hai ki ek point hoga kuch 3-4 saal pehele ki aisa agar koi sochte bhi honge. But abhi jaha hum khade hai, jis tarah ki filmein main kar rahi hu ya mujhe directors jis tarah ki films offer kar rahe hai, I don’t see that now.”
Yami On Industry Evolution
Placing the conversation in the broader context of a changing India, Yami said the industry itself is evolving. “And I think waqt jaisi ki keh rahe hai ye ek naya Hindustan hai. Toh ye ek modern cinema hai jaha par badlav yaha bhi zaruri hai aur bilkul woh badlav dikhega.”
