Pallavi Joshi On Why The Film Title Was Renamed To The Bengal Files

When asked about the controversy surrounding the name of the film changing from The Delhi Files: Bengal Chapter to The Bengal Files, Pallavi Joshi answered, “See, I will tell you what — we were sure that we were going to make a film on the partition. Aur humein yeh bhi pata tha ki usmein Direct Action Day aur Noakhali ke riots honge. Lekin jab tak poori research humare haath mein nahi aayi, tab tak we didn’t know ki yeh almost poora Bengal mein hone wala hai.”

Talking about the film’s initial title, she said, “So our working title for the film was The Delhi Files: Bengal Chapter. Haan, it was called the Bengal Chapter. So we knew that Bengal is going to be a part of it. Uske baad jab script likhi gayi, the working title continued. And I somewhere thought that this was a valid title, because jo politics hai, woh toh Delhi se hi aati hai — it’s the epicentre, our national capital.

Pallavi Joshi On Why The Title Was Changed

Addressing the film’s title change, the actress said, “Personally, I had loved this title (The Delhi Files: Bengal Chapter). But phir sabko aisa lagne laga ki hum log unnecessarily complicated kar rahe hain. When it’s a story about Bengal, then just call it The Bengal Files. Like we had called The Kashmir Files, Kashmir Files hi. That wasn’t called Delhi Files: Kashmir Story. So then we decided to change it. And this change happened while we were shooting, and every actor was aware of it. “

She further stated,“Dusri baat yeh hai ki film industry mein pata nahi kya chalans hote honge, lekin humare yahan toh ek bound script hoti hai. Aur jab tak script poori nahi hoti, hum kaam hi shuru nahi karte. I am an actor, jab tak mujhe pata hi nahi chalega ki mere character ka graph kya hai, tab tak main us character ko perform kaise kar paungi? Aur hum stars ko cast nahi karte, hum actors ko cast karte hain. Aur actors bina script padhe na haan karte hain, na aage badhte hain. Toh yeh kehna ki humein script nahi mili thi, ya sirf scenes diye gaye the; this is very wrong.”

Pallavi Joshi On Political Pressure Faced By The Makers

Commenting on the pressure faced by the filmmakers, she said, ” Main samajhti hoon, pressure mein honge. Political pressure bhi bahut zyada hota hoga unpar. Lekin phir bhi, mujhe lagta hai ki jis calibre ke artist aap hain, aapne itni filmein ki hain, uske baad aapmein thodi toh himmat honi chahiye thi. Main khadi hoon aaj, main hi himmat dikh rahi hoon. I am a woman, and I am doing it. And I can say is, grow a pair.”
