Uorfi Javed Reflects On Finding Home In Mumbai And Housing Difficulties
When asked about her previous comment on finding a house in Mumbai being hard, Uorfi reflected on her present say scenario. She shared, “Bahut pehle bola tha, chaar-paanch saal pehle bhi. Abhi toh main ek achhe ghar mein reh rahi hoon. Meri landlord bhi kaafi achhi hai, bahut supportive hai. Koi kuch bol bhi deta hai na, matlab, ‘Arre, aapki tenant Uorfi Javed aise-waise…’ toh woh bol deti hain, ‘Haan toh? Tumhare baap ka ghar hai kya?’ Woh meri tarah hi hai, seedha bol deti hain. She is a female, and she is very nice.”
She continued, “But I feel like, what I have observed, pehle maine aisa bola tha, but I feel like I have observed ki har society ka apna-apna reservation hota hai Mumbai mein. Kahin aisi Hindu societies hain, Jain societies hain jahan Muslims allowed nahi hain. Phir wahin kahin aisi Muslim societies hain jahan Hindus aur Jains allowed nahi hain. Toh har jagah alag-alag hai. Kuch family societies hain jahan bachelors allowed nahi hote. Toh kuch aur societies hain jahan kuch aur cheezein allowed nahi hoti. Har society ke apne-apne rules aur preferences hote hain. So difficult toh hota hi hai, but then it’s just about finding the right place.”
Uorfi Javed On Housing Difficulties In Mumbai
Uorfi Javed has repeatedly faced challenges in renting an apartment in Mumbai due to discrimination from landlords and housing societies, primarily over her religion, her status as a single woman, and her bold fashion choices. She revealed that “Muslim owners often refuse to rent her a house because of her clothing choices,” while “Hindu owners deny her tenancy simply because she is Muslim.”
Additionally, societal policing has been a constant issue; “even when she managed to secure viewings, she found that housing societies and landlords attempted to impose heavy-handed restrictions on her lifestyle, such as dictating who she could invite over or what she could cook.” She also cited concerns about her safety, stating that “some flat owners were uncomfortable with the political threats she received as a public figure.”
These hurdles led to initial frustrations, with her being confined to “smaller or less-than-ideal accommodations because of the societal gatekeeping.” Frustrated by the constant rejection from rental societies, Uorfi decided to “bypass the rental process altogether,” publicly declaring her goal to “save aggressively to purchase a large duplex with dedicated wardrobe space for her extensive clothing and shoe collection.”
