Over the years, Taapsee Pannu has established herself as one of Hindi cinema’s most dependable and bankable stars. The actress – who began her career in the Hindi film industry with Chashme Baddoor in 2013, is now known for backing strong stories and taking on roles that challenge her as an actor. From women-led dramas to thrillers and mainstream entertainers, Taapsee has built a filmography that reflects her willingness to take risks and trust her instincts.
Recently the actress got candid with us as she looked back at her career and reflected on what makes her journey different. She also spoke about why her success has often been difficult for people to digest or explain. Read on to know all she shared.
Taapsee Pannu On Making It In Bollywood Despite Having No Godfather
Taapsee Pannu exclusively opened up about her journey till now and what makes her the proudest. She said, “How easy is it to say she’s successful because she has a godfather, or because she’s from that family, or because she’s signed by a studio? None of this applied to me. I realised this when I was cast in Dunki. For the longest time, no one could wrap their head around it. How is she in this movie? I wasn’t part of Shah Rukh sir’s social circle, nor had Rajkumar Hirani ever worked with me before.”
She continued, “He had called me to his office once just to ask how I’d approached a certain role. Much later, he called to ask if I’d be okay hearing the script of Dunki. No one could digest that this had happened. They cannot put me in a box. So, I’ve started hearing all sorts of stories about me. She’s difficult, no one wants to work with her, she has this problem, that problem. Because no one knows me, it’s easy to make up stories.”
Taapsee Pannu’s response reflects a larger challenge she has faced throughout her career – being understood on her own terms in an industry that often looks for familiar explanations for an actor’s success. Her filmography has seen her move between commercial entertainers, emotional dramas, thrillers and women-led stories, often choosing characters that allow her to explore different aspects of her craft.
As she continues to choose projects across genres and scales, her message remains clear – success does not always come with an easily explained backstory, and sometimes, refusing to fit into a box is what defines an actor’s journey.
