satish kaushik, satish kaushik death, satish kaushik roles

Thursday morning began on a bleak and shocking note for the entire nation as India woke up to the news of veteran actor Satish Kaushik passing away. The actor-filmmaker was 66 years old and suffered a heart attack.

Satish Kaushik had been a part of the film industry for over 4 decades and the news of his death has came as a shock for everyone. From the Gen X to Gen Z, Kaushik was an active part of each generation’s entertainment. His comic timing was impeccable and he has added insurmountable laughs in each of ours growing up years. And he still continued to do so till his last breath.

While physically he might have bid adieu to the world, his roles will forever remain iconic. And from his illustrious filmography spanning over 40 years, here are 5 roles of his that will always be memorable:

Calendar in Mr India

Anil Kapoor as Mr India, Amrish Puri as Mogambo and Sridevi as Seema might be the heart of Mr India. But Satish Kaushik’s Calendar was the soul of the film. The actor added his signature comical touch through his hilarious character. His innocence and connect with the kids made him a fan favourite. And even his look became a signature with the way he carried it.

Kashiram in Ram Lakhan

Anil Kapoor and Satish Kaushik are indeed quite a successful duo. Ram Lakhan starring Anil and Jackie Shroff was a story of two brothers. However, Kaushik brought the comic relief in the story with his role of Kashiram. He came in like a breath of fresh air in the film and won everyone over with his antics.

Mama in Mr and Mrs Khiladi

A personal favourite, Kaushik as the astrologer Mama in Akshay Kumar and Juhi Chawla starrer Mr and Mrs Khiladi has to be one of the funniest roles he has played. Him giving absurd ideas to Akshay’s character and then sneaking in a kiss at the end made for some of the most laugh-out-loud gags in Hindi films. This one will always be special.

Pappu Pager in Deewana Mastana

Satish Kaushik and comedy were always synonymous and one of his most memorable comic character came in Pappu Pager from Deewana Mastana. The colourful personality of the character and his colourful clothes, screamed Kaushik’s supremacy as an artist. The veteran managed to win the hearts of many in this Anil Kapoor and Govinda starrer.

Jumbo in Gharwali Baharwali

Kaushik and Anil again teamed up for this one and in this film, the veteran artist tried to hide his boss and friend’s second marriage. While the plot was a little convoluted, the portrayal by Kaushik was top notch. The artist was a maverick on screen.

Satish Kaushik is a name that will forever be etched in the history of Indian cinema. He might have gone from the world physically, but his craft will live on through his characters. He will truly be missed as Indian cinema lost a gem today.
