Akshay Kumar, who is known for delivering multiple superhit movies in a year, is currently waiting for his next release ‘Kesari’. The last year turned out to be quite successful for him as he gave us three consecutive hit movies including ‘Padman’, ‘Gold’ and ‘2.0’. The year 2019 also seems to be very promising as Akshay Kumar has several movies scheduled to release. Akshay Kumar’s first movie of 2019, ‘Kesari’ has been in the news since its trailer was released. It is to be noted that ‘Kesari’ is a war drama, based on the story of ‘Havildar Ishar Singh, who takes part in the battle of Saragarhi, which is said to be an army of 21 Sikhs, who fought against 10,000 Afghanis in 1897. Directed by Anurag Singh and produced by Karan Johar, ‘Kesari’ is scheduled to release on March 21.

Here are interesting facts about Akshay Kumar’s ‘Kesari’

1. In ‘Kesari’, the Khiladi of Bollywood will be portraying the role of Havildar Ishar Singh, who led the 36th Sikh Regiment and had the reputation of being a feisty and experienced sergeant. Under his leadership, the 20 Sikhs fought against 10,000 Afghans and laid down their lives for the cause which would eventually save forts of Lockhart and Gulistan from the Afghan enemies.

2. During the shooting of ‘Kesari’s climax, Akshay Kumar suffered rib injury. Following his injury, he was asked to take a break and return to Mumbai for treatment. However, Akshay stood by his team and stayed back in Wai and continued the shooting, so that the filmmakers did no incur any loses for the delay.

3. It is based on a real historical battle that was fought on 12th of September in 1897. The battle pitted 21 Sikh soldiers of the British Indian Army against 10,000 Afghan Orakzai tribesmen.

4. Earlier, reports suggested that Lawrence Woodward of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ fame had been roped in to perform stunts in the film. Akshay will be learning sword fighting and hand-to-hand combat for the action scenes in the film. As per reports, the film has been shot in parts of Mumbai, Wai and Jaipur, where an old-worldly looking set was created for the shoot.

5. All the perished soldiers were posthumously awarded the Indian Order of Merit, the highest gallantry award of that time. An epic poem Khalsa Bahadur was also composed in their memory, while their feats were taught in textbooks in Punjab.

Notably, ‘Saragarhi Day, is a Sikh military commemoration day, which is celebrated on 12 September every year to commemorate The Battle of Saragarhi.
