Memes 0f Chellam having an answer to every question and a solution to every problem have been going viral. Uday Mahesh who plays Chellam Sir is astounded by the response from the fans, he told India Today, “I didn’t expect so much attention. Of course, I am happy with the response from people across the country. I am enjoying the memes that are created under my character. I loved the UP Police’s meme and the ones where Google was replaced with my character’s name. Chellam Sir is not the first character by Uday that has made waves. Mahesh is also quite famous for the portrayal of Vishwanathan in the STAR Vijay television series Office.

Uday Mahesh was widely applauded for his directorial debut with Naalai that starred Richard Rishi and Madhumitha. The movie had a gaster plot and was released in 2006. Next Mahesh directed Natraj in Chakkara Viyugam which was a crime thriller.

Uday Mahesh was originally to play Deepan’s role in The Family Man which was played by Azhagam Perumal but ended up bagging Chellam Sir. He told India Today, “I auditioned for that role. For two months, there was no response from the team. So, I thought it’s a lost opportunity. Later, they offered me Chellam sir. Even though it’s a small character, I decided to do it because The Family Man 1 was a huge hit. Also, my character has a comical touch, which pushed me to take it up.”

Uday is good friends with director Shoojit Sircar and he has also co-written his movie Yahaan, “When I was working on ad films, I did casting for his projects. Sircar is a good friend of mine.”
