Drishyam The Conclusion Review
“Do October ko kya hua tha?” Ever since the first Drishyam movie released over a decade ago (in 2015), this has been a question that has intrigued moviegoers. While we all know that this was the day the Salgaonkar- Vijay (Ajay Devgn), Nandini (Shriya Saran), Anju (Ishita Dutta) and Anu (Mrunal Jadhav) went to Panaji, attended a Satsang and ate pav bhaji, the final chapter in this Hindi film franchise is by far the best of the three. It’s intriguing from the very first frames and will have your mind completely blown away by the time the end credits roll by.
As we know, the Drishyam films follow the Salgaonkar family as they attempt to hide an accidental murder. While in the first two instalments we saw who was killer, how there body was hidden and the family of four being given the clean chit, the final chapter sees Meera (Tabu) and Mahesh Deshmukh (Rajat Kapoor) reopen their son’s death case under the sharp eyes of SP Crime Branch, Rajveer Singh Tomar (Jaideep Ahlawat). Assisting Rajveer in getting the Deshmukh’s justice and revenge are SI Laxmikant Gaitonde (Kamlesh Sawant) – the only constant sir on the case from the beginning and top advocate Indrajith Shetty (Prakash Raj).
This time, the agenda is to find out who’s bones they’ve found buried under the police station, how Vijay – a 4th failed student tries to outsmart 4 highly educated individuals who graduated from prestigious universities and whether the law will succeed in putting the Salgaonkars behind bars. Will Tomar find enough evidence to get Vijay arrested? Will Shetty be able to prove the Salgaonkars are responsible for Sam’s death? Or will Vijay once again be able to turn the tide in his favour and save not only himself from jail time but his family too? The answers to these questions is what makes up the film’s plot and to know the answers you will need to watch Drishyam The Conclusion in theatres.
The stakes are higher this time, the atmosphere more tense, and Abhishek Pathak – who is back as the film’s writer and director, delivers. Read our honest Drishyam The Conclusion review to know why you need to watch the film in theatres.
What Works
From Abhishek Pathak’s story (that’s way different from the Malayalam original) to the manner in which he, Aamil Keeyan Khan and Parveez Shaikh wrote the narrative, many things work in the film’s favour. The crime thriller’s gripping and fast pace storytelling, Kamlesh Sawant’s honest and hilarious performance as Gaitonde, the building to the climax and the unexpected twists will blow your mind. The acting and music don’t disappoint either.
Technical Analytics
Direction
Abhishek Pathak has done a commendable job with Drishyam The Conclusion and opting to go in a different direction as compared to Mohanlal’s film. The film is crisp and the fast pace makes sure you are engrossed in the narrative and not the popcorn or pav bhaji you are eating. Abhishek understands exactly what the audience expects from a franchise like Drishyam and delivers without making it feel stretched or by reusing tired and tested formulas that we are done with.
Story & Screenplay
Aside from the direction, the film’s story and the manner in which it is written are among the strongest reasons why this film is going to be loved by many. The clash between Ajay Devgn’s Vijay and Jaideep Ahlawat’s Rajveer in the first half is beautifully written – it’s tense but still there’s an undercurrent of lot more happening. Even the court room scenes, especially the one featuring Prakash Raj’s Indrajith and Shriya Saran’s Nandini deserves a round of applause. The manner in which the climax is written will have you on the edge of your seat. It will keep you trying to guess what Vijay did before it unfolds.
The dialogues – penned by Aamil Keyan Khan, are on-point and the ones Gaitonde delivers will have you chuckling.
Cinematography & Editing
The cinematography by Sudhir K. Chaudhary is good, no complaints. It’s not something new but its still not the same old Goa we always see in Hindi cinema. Sandeep Francis’ editing is worth applause as the editing is neat and crisp with no unnecessary or prolonged shots.
Music
Given how tense and nail-biting the narrative is, there no scope for music. However, Muskura Do – sung by Lucky Ali, does adds to the emotional layer of the story. The film’s background score – composed by Amar Mohile, is electrifying and enhances the tension and drama, especially as the climax draws near.
Star Cast
Drishyam The Conclusion is Ajay Devgn aura farming as Vijay Salgaonkar . He is still the simple, uneducated middle class man willing to go to any limit to keep his family safe and away from prison. His intense and expressive eyes do all the talking with the actor needing to deliver much dialogues. But everything he says something, its delivered with power and authority. This performance is honestly the best Ajay has acted in a long time.
Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta and Mrunal Jadhav are pivotal to the narrative and their performances are nuanced even though they don’t have much dialogues or meaningful presence in the first half. Shriya’s hogs the limelight during a confrontation with Prakash Raj’s Indrajith Shetty and shows just how good an actress she is.
Jaideep Ahlawat commands attention every time he’s on screen and is 100% the most effective choice to play SP Rajveer. Prakash Raj as top lawyer Indrajith Shetty is very good. He stands out not only during the court room scenes but even during the brainstorming sessions in his office. Kamlesh Sawant’s performance as Inspector Gaitonde is hilarious, especially when he visits a drama theatres as part of his surveillance or references the memes and conversations surrounding what the Salgaonkars did on October 2.
Tabu and Rajat Kapoor have limited screen time but make your heart wrench. Their struggles as they deal with depression while also trying to get justice and revenge for thier son’s murder is layered.
Conclusion
Seeing is believing – Vijay says it, not just me, and you need to see Drishyam The Conclusion to believe the lengths Ajay Devgn’s Vijay Salgaonkar will go to for his family. At a time when extensive promotions are done to create buzz around a film, the makers of this crime thriller didn’t have to do much to generate hype.
