Selena Gomez is currently facing backlash over the financial difficulties encountered by her mental health startup, Wondermind. The singer-actor has come under scrutiny following a report that claimed her company has been unable to pay its employees and has reduced their health benefits.
Selena Gomez Is In A Financial Difficulties?
Despite being one of the wealthiest musicians globally, Selena has faced criticism online after Forbes reported that her mother took out a loan to cover some of Wondermind’s debts. The publication noted over the weekend that Wondermind, co-founded by Selena Gomez, is experiencing a financial crisis. The report stated that the startup “is being kept afloat by Gomez’s mom and Wondermind’s CEO Mandy Teefey.”
According to the report, Selena told staff on Thursday that she had taken out a loan against her home to settle outstanding debts. However, an insider later told People that this claim is false. Forbes also mentioned that employees had been paid for one missed paycheck, while another remains pending.
A spokesperson for Wondermind addressed the situation, stating it has been “rectified.” They told Forbes, “Like many startups, Wondermind has been working through its own set of growing pains,” adding that “in the coming days we will be transitioning into a new chapter for Wondermind, and continuing our important work in mental fitness that helps hundreds of thousands of people.”
Selena Is Listed As A Billionaire
Last year, Bloomberg listed Selena among its billionaires in the entertainment industry, estimating her net worth at $1.3 billion. Other estimates vary from $700 million to $1 billion. Regardless of the exact figure, Selena remains one of the wealthiest figures in entertainment, which has led to significant online trolling.
On Reddit, users expressed their opinions, with one commenting, “Billionaires billionaring again.” Another added, “It’s ridiculous Selena started this company and can’t even be assed to meet or pay her employees or to do even basic promo for her own company. She is one of the richest people in America, this is unacceptable.”
Many comments criticised Selena for her perceived lack of involvement in the startup. One Reddit user wrote, “If she’s that invested in the charity, she should just fund it. If she’s not, then give the employees plenty of notice and wind it up. Not paying them is unacceptable.”
However, Selena has not issued any public statement regarding the situation so far.
