Yaariyan 2 Review

Yaariyan 2 starring Divya Khosla Kumar, Meezaan Jafri, and Pearl V Puri starrer is quite a modern story. It taps into several current-day concepts, but in terms of idea and execution, as well as technical aspects the film lacks. Radhika and Vinay’s story is a slice of life, and the story is a hero in Yaariyan 2. Even the performances of the lead actors only add to the charm. However, technical glitches and vague jumps make the plot a little confusing. As you sit through the film, you go through some emotions and feel that pain. Especially it is Meezaan Jafri’s vulnerable stance that will leave your eyes moist.

Music is a big uplifter for Divya Khosla Kumar starrer Yaariyan 2. It helps make the sweetness of the story stronger. Having said that, the supporting cast of the film has done a fabulous job, especially, Yash Daasguptaa. He is simple, yet very charming in his own way. Even Anaswara’s girl-next-door avatar will make your heart skip a beat. Sadly, Divya and Pearl don’t manage to impress so much, but Meezaan comes out as a surprise package with his layered performance.

What I really liked in the film was how the directors dealt with several concepts of closure, moving on, adulting, and handling heartbreaks in a mature manner. But adding that dash of melodrama makes it a little too much to handle.

Story of Yaariyan 2

Ladli Chibber (Divya Khosla Kumar) a bubbly, enthusiastic Punjabi girl living in Shimla, finds it hard to find the right marriage prospect due to her medical condition. But then she meets Abhay Katiyal (Yash Daasguptaa) a reserved, corporate guy who agrees to marry Ladli after the first meeting itself. On the side, there is Bajrang aka Bajju (Pearl V Puri) who is the simple, seedha saadha boy, stuck in his regular job and monotonous life. And then there is Shikhar Randhawa (Meezaan Jafri) who is a biker boy, he doesn’t mince his words and is the problem solver in every gang, he is the kind of sibling your parents would advise you to stay away from, but you don’t anyways.

While they all deal with regular life struggles, they even have their emotional battles. Ladli who gets married and shifts to Mumbai figures that her husband is not very interested in her. Bajju who seeks validation at all fronts, finds love in Shauna (Warina Hussain), but he is in for some cheating and heartbreak. Shikhar who tries to play the tough guys loses his heart to Ikroor Awasthi (Anaswara Rajan) who is dealing with her lover’s death. As the story unfolds, Ladli figures that Abhay has not gotten over his ex-lover, and feels cheated. She walks out of the marriage, but later Shikhar and Ikroor discover Abhay’s past and the tragic love life he had.

Then Ladli tries to rework her marriage and succeeds, while Bajju is nowhere in the picture, we just see a few glimpses of him crying over this heartbreak. Shikhar on the other hand deals with his scarred childhood and his parents’ separation, he is a broken man, who is triggered by being pushed toward his past memories. Something similar happens when Ikroor’s sister insults him, and he decides to part ways. But later he realizes his mistake and fights for her. Eventually, all three cousins win at life, Bajju gets married (to whom, watch the film for that), and they all live happily ever after.

Highlights of Yaariyan 2:

1. The supporting cast – Yash Daasguptaa and Anaswara Rajan

Both Yash and Anaswara have delivered great performances. They are very charming in the roles they play. In fact, it is their performance that even lifts up their co-stars in places. The emotional scenes between Yash and Divya give you some tears. Even Anaswara’s love for Meezaan makes you smile. And a major credit for that goes to Yash and Anaswara complimenting Divya and Meezaan so well.

2. Music

Living up to its stance of being a musical extravaganza, Radhika and Vinay chose some iconic background scores that really work in favor of the story. It is actually the music that elevates many of the scenes. And Simroon Tera Naam is the soul of the film, while Blue Hai Paani Paani is its silver lining.

3. Meezaan Jafri as Shikhar Randhawa

While you will like the sweet-and-sour equation the cousins share, it is Meezaan who shines through in the story. As Anaswara calls him tough boy, he really showcases that well, but his vulnerable side is even better. He makes you fall in love when he falls in love with Ikroor, you won’t be able to stop gushing over his romantic stance. Having said that, Meezaan is Shikhar is the cutest sibling ever who always has his cousins’ back and he is solution to their every problem.

Drawbacks of Yaariyan 2

1. The duration

The film is way too long and unnecessarily dragged, in fact, it feels like the team is trying to hammer their message into your head with several bits being long when they are not needed.

2. Technical aspects

The major flaw of the film is the random jumps and weaving of the story, along with bad editing. There are many places where color corrections are needed and even more realistic editing. Even in terms of character arcs, there are random jumps with three parallel stories being told. Like, Divya inviting Meezaan to the wedding is followed by a very random jump where the wedding festivities have begun and the bride is upset with her brothers. And there are some other scenes too.

3. Lead performances from Divya and Pearl

Sadly, Divya and Pearl fail to connect. They are very good as cousins, but that doesn’t translate. It is all on the surface. In fact, Pearl’s character is not seen for a long time in the second half. Divya’s emotional side looks better than her fun avatar.

Conclusion

With many technical flaws, the story is a sweet one, so it won’t harm you to watch it on the big screen especially if you order some strong coffee or tea to go with it.
