Set in Goa 1947, the film sheds light on the power clash between the Salvadors and Fernandeses in the still-Portuguese ruled kingdom as the rest of India celebrated its freedom. Rising from nothing and becoming formidable players in the power game is power-sibling Raya (Yash) and Ganga (Nayanthara). After several clashes that only further cement their position as decision makers of Goa, the sibling plan of strengthening their hold by getting Raya married to Rebecca (Tara Sutaria). While things initially go according to plan, in comes Nadia (Kiara Advani), the showstopper of a travelling circus. But are her intentions pure or is their something hidden behind her arrival? That’s a answers you will get in theatres.

Without giving much away – that are borderline spoilers, things soon sour between Raya and a pregnant Nadia, leading to the latter becoming a single mother to a son names Rumi (also Yash when he grows up). Along with this, Elizabeth (Huma Qureshi) and her brother Tony (Akshay Oberoi) also conspire to tarnish the reputation of Raya and Ganga and remove them from the top of the food chain. Are they successful? Well… the drama that unfolds tells a tale that will never have the word ‘fairy’ in front of it.

What Works

Yash’s acting as Raya and Rumi aka Ticket, is top notch. He brings a madness unlike anything we’ve seen on the big screen before. The film will break all pre conceived ideas of the women in the film being only eye candy, each of the five ladies – Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Huma Qureshi, Tara Sutaria, Rukmini Vasanth, have substance and take a stand while adding glamour.

Geetu Mohandas had delivered a film that is sure to keep fans glued to their seats till the very end with the unexpected climax high.

Technical Analysis

Direction

Geetu Mohandas – who has givenn us films such as Kelkkunnundo, Liar’s Dice and Moothon, doesn’t disappoint with Toxic. She’s brought the masses a film that has multiple strong female characters in a world usually dominated only by men.

Story & Screenplay

Geetu’s story, brought to life by both Mohandas and Yash, is not a 2-dimentional narrative of a gangster who finds redemption as the climax rolls in. The story and the way it’s presented is both larger than life and raw – something very few writers are able to do well.

VFX

The special effects are on-point and make the scenes more believable. Be it the blasts in the middle of the sea, chopping of limps or bullets wounds, they all seem realistic.

Action

The team behind the top notch action of Toxic deserve a huge round of applause. From 1v1 fight sequences to elaborate choreographies, the action is not only beautifully planned but the execution is also impeccable.

Editing

A film with a runtime of over 180 minutes is too long to sit through for today’s reel generation, but the gripping content and crisp editing will make sure you are glued to you seat till the end credits roll by.

Music

The film’s music album -composed by Vishal Mishra, Ravi Basrur, Tanishk Bagchi, Faheem Abdullah, and Arslan Nizami, was a hit even before the film released. While the film gives us more understanding behind each song and their placement, it is the BGM that adds a soul to the narrative.

Star Cast

Yash kills it as Raya and Rumi. The actor – who wowed us as Rocky Bhai in the KGF film and promises to do so once again as Ravana in Ramayana, has showcased an acting range rarely seen on the pan-India screen. The aggression, the pain, the heartbreak, the love, the tiny joys, the deceits… Yash makes sure you feel every thing his character feels not only with his actions but mainly with his eyes.

The film’s leading ladies – Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Huma Qureshi, Tara Sutaria and Rukmini Vasanth, despite limited screen time leave an impact on all. Kiara’s vulnerability, Nayanthara’s broken but stong boss lady vibes are the highlights when it comes to talking about the women of Toxic.

The film’s supporting cast – be it Akshay Oberoi’s Tony, Darrell D’Silva’s Salvador or , Sudev Nair’s Karmadi, each actor delivers and make their characters memorable. Even Sanjeeda Sheikh – who has a very, very small cameo role, leaves a mark.
