Dharmendra Purchased A Fiat As A Backup For His Bollywood Career So That He Can Drive A Taxi

Dharmendra’s cinematic journey is nothing short of legendary; but did you know the veteran star once bought a fiat car as a backup plan in case his acting dreams didn’t pan out? Known for his muscular physique, rugged charm, and baritone voice, Dharmendra became one of Bollywood’s most adored icons. Yet, the small-town boy from Punjab never imagined that decades later, he would still be celebrated as one of Indian cinema’s most beloved stars.

Dharmendra Once Bought A Fiat Thinking If His Bollywood Career Doesn’t Work He Will Become A Taxi Driver

Born Dharmendra Kewal Krishna Deol in Nasrali, Ludhiana, he was just a village boy when he first watched the 1948 film Shaheed and was mesmerized by Dilip Kumar. That moment changed his life. Struggling academically but deeply moved by cinema, a 13-year-old Dharmendra began manifesting his dream every day in front of the mirror, saying, “Main Dilip Kumar banna chahta hoon.”

In an old interview with India TV, Dharmendra recalled how he used to admire film stars and think, “Where are these beautiful people from? I should be among them. I belong there.” He eventually made his place among them, but what’s lesser known is that the dreamer in him also had a practical side. Despite his growing success, Dharmendra prepared for the possibility of failure — by buying a car he could turn into a taxi if needed.

“When I started doing better and earned some money, I bought my first car, a Fiat,” Dharmendra once shared. “But my brother Ajit wasn’t happy. He said, ‘Paaji, you could have bought a better car, maybe one with an open roof — you’re a hero!’ I told him, ‘We can’t always trust this industry. If things ever go wrong, I’ll use this Fiat as a taxi and earn my living.’” Thankfully, that moment never came. The audience’s love ensured Dharmendra remained one of Bollywood’s brightest stars.

Dharmendra’s Career

Over the decades, he delivered several box-office hits such as Phool Aur Patthar (1966), Mamta (1966), Anupama (1966), and Aaye Din Baahar Ke (1966). Though 1967 brought a few commercial setbacks with films like Dulhan Ek Raat Ki and Majhli Didi, the following year turned things around. In 1968, Dharmendra starred in successful films like Shikar, Aankhen, Izzat, and Mere Hamdam Mere Dost, solidifying his place as one of Hindi cinema’s top stars.

Even the superstar wave brought by Rajesh Khanna in 1969 couldn’t dim Dharmendra’s stardom — he, along with Manoj Kumar, remained a consistent box-office favorite. Today, more than six decades later, Dharmendra continues to grace the silver screen, winning hearts in every era. He was recently seen in Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya.
